I finally bought a battery for this calculator tonight and installed it. It will not do anything except show "0". Pushing Off will not work. Entering numbers does not work. Nothing. I have tried resetting it, but to no avail. Do you have any suggestions on how to resolve this?

I do not know what make and model of calculator you have, but generally speaking, the M key stands for Memory key, When you press it it brings the content of the memory register on the display. But if you have not stored anything in memory (by entering a number then pressing M+) then the calculator displays the default value in memory, which is 0.
None of these solutions answer his question. When converting a fraction or any number with decimal places to Binary, the TI-89 gives "Error: Domain error." For example, entering .6875 [2ND][MATH][BASE][BIN] does not work. I haven't found a way to do it with built in functions. In order to do these types of conversions, I use the following method.
Convert: 0.6875 to Binary - left of decimal is a 0, so write down a 0, then a decimal point: (0.) - multiply .6875 x 2 = 1.375 left of decimal is 1, write a 1: (0.1) - drop the 1 and multiply .375 x 2 = .75 left of decimal is 0. write a 0: (0.10) - multiply .75 x 2 = 1.5 left of decimal is 1, write a 1: (0.101)
- drop the 1, multiple .5 x 2 = 1. left of decimal is 1, write a 1: (0.1011). - since there is no more fraction, the final answer is (0.1011). Hope this helps.
That because you're in GRA mode (so you're entering angles in gradians, not degrees). To go back to DEG mode (where angles are in degrees) press Shift, then press Mode and finally press 4.
Not knowing what to do, I tried anything that could possibly help: I installed fresh batteries and I pushed the reset button on the back of the calculator (Sharp EL-546L) and finally, it work all right after more than 5 years I own the calculator and where it did work correctly for 5 minutes. I tried the reset button in the past (long time ago) and it didn't work. This time it worked because, maybe, I've used fresh batteries. Marcello

I think you should get a Texas Instruments calculator and push the 'y=' button then put the equation like '2x+4' in the y1 area. You can put the X by using the variable botton. I hope my english makes sense I am not a native speaker.
Try pushing and releasing [f], then [4]. This will give you 4 decimal places. (It follows that if you want 5 decimal places, push 5 instead of 4, etc). If that doesn't work, you can try taking the batteries out and putting them back in which should reset it to 2 decimal places, then set it where you want it following the above.
If it continues to malfunction I suggest taking the batteries out for 24 hours to allow a static discharge. This will lose anything you stored in the calculator, setting it back to how it came from the factory.
Okay, I did what the best solution did and worked with it.
"1. press 2nd F (left top corner) 2. ENG/FIX (the button next to 2nd F) 3. press 0 (if you don't want calculator to round off any decimals)"
In order to get your exact value of pi, in step #3, instead of 0, press the decimal [ . ]
This should give you no decimals when entering a number and give you 3.141592654... when you input pi.
Hope that works/helps.
