I assume that your laptop's display has been damaged. Are you sure that other things are working normally? If other components are working, then problem will be with the display unit. Try to repair or replace with new one.
connect it to external monitor - if blank to then problem in video card if works fine then check LCD cable - test it with any multimeter with sound mode, iuf OK then carefully connect it back, if broken then replace it, so, last one is LCD, if video card OK , LCD cable ok - then replace LCD
If the backlight stays on then your lcd needs to be replaced. It is a easy job there are a couple of rubber pieces around the bezel which is the plastic around the screen. once you remove those you get to the screws remove those and then carefully take off the bezel. there will be anywhere from 2-4 screws that hold the lcd to the brackets in the side and there might be two at the top. there are two things that you need to unplug a cord at the bottom of lcd which is usually oink and white that is the power. on the back of the lcd is your video its long and flat can't miss it. Reverse steps to put back in.
If you replace the lcd yourself, if that is in fact the problem...then around 100 if you install it yourself with a replacement from ebay. It's not hard to do.
You have identified your problem/fault by plugging in an external monitor and the image is OK. This proves the video card is OK and the fault could be the inverter or most likely the CCFL lamp.
The flickering screen indicated the CCFL lamp is faulty, it is a mini fluro tube which provides the back-light to the LCD. The inverter supplies high voltage to the CCFL lamp. It could be faulty and it is easier to replace.

then apply and ok.
thats it.
I think your LCD is stuffed is it under warranty do you know BUT if the screen is cracked they wont replace it typical HP. To get your external monitor running hold down the function key and the blue monitor looking key similtaneously normally on compaq its the F4 key but look around your keyboard (looks like a monitor) and is blue letters.
