Booting trouble... my acer laptop is having issues booting up...i generally leave it on most of the time...but was away for the weekend so i shut it down and left it off at home for the weekend...was working last time i used it....but now when i boot it up it shows the ACER boot screen (and i can enter setup with F2 if needed) but then it just goes to a black screen with a cursor flashing in the top left corner...and stays there....any ideas what is going on?

This is generally a hardware issue - if the computer is under warranty get it fixed through Acer. If not you may need professional help. You don't mention how old the laptop is but if it is older than a year or two and you live in a dusty environment it could be overheating. If the fan is not running or always running on super-high then it is probably overheating.

Another thing to try is using a boot CD (any boot CD will work) and see if the computer still shuts down after that 30 seconds. If yes, definitely hardware. If not, possible that it's a windows issue.

check how often it shuts down and if it shuts down when you start a particular application then start your computer and go to BIOS and leave it on there ( for example if your comp shuts down every 3 mins in normal mode then leave the comp on for 15 mins in bios to determine if it is a hardware or software issue then check in sfae mode the event log or error reporting if any hardware is causing the issue, update the drivers or try with new user or reinstall OS as last option.

you can replace the fan if you know how to do so but take it to a qualified technician and they will be able to sort it out for you and it should be that expensive

Yes, sometimes a faulty battery can cause this issue on some Acer Laptops - have seen it many times. Please replace battery OR test on A/C to make sure. If you get another battery, please test first if problem remains before buying it of cause.

Not a good thing to do, I had a client that left for a weekend, had his laptop on the arm of his sofa and came back to find the laptop fried. If you left it on stand by and it was left on a surface that obstructed airflow, it probably overheated and severely damaged your computer.
My client's la[top overheated so badly that it melted the label off the bottom of the computer. He was lucky it didn't cause a fire.
Check for signs of burn marks and smell for burnt components.

this looks like heat issue...varify that the cpu fan is working.....apply heat sink cream on the cpu surface and the heat sink

do you have the power saving settings to switch laptop off after a certain lenghth of time?is the laptop overheating?are you using it on a soft surface eg deep pile carpet?

Sounds like a over heating issue, try using caned air to blow and dust out of your fan area, then make sure when the system has ran for a while the fan does turn on (laptops to save on power don't run the fan constent only when the temp rises enough to need it. also make sure your not leaving the laptop run on blankets or pillows as they will block air flow through vents on the bottom or side of the laptop. Hard surface is best. if all else fails you can get a cooler pad to use with the laptop.
