A steam machine won't help that problem at all. What you need is a Little Green Machine -- Google or look at WalMart or Target.
This is a "mini-shampoo" machine that sprays hot water on the spot and then vacuums up the residual water. You can be aggressive with it - really hose down the spot to dilute the stain, and then vacuum up the liquid.

i WAS LOOKING AROUND FOR A SERVICE MANUAL FOR MY F5897900 CARPET CLEANER AND I SAW SOME THING ABOUT HAVING TO "PRIME" THE PUMP. YOU PPARENTLY TAKE THE TOOL HOSE AND HOLD YOUR HAND OVER IT FOR ABOUT 15 SECONDS. THIS MAY OR MAY NOT WORK.
ANYBODY KNOW WHERE I CAN FIND A SERVICE MANUAL FOR A HOOVER CARPET CLEANER? SEEMS TO BE A VERY CLOSELEY GUARDED SECRET.
