Oh yes. This must be a new machine. I would recommend pouring and draining boiling water in the maker several times. You can also use vinegar, but again it has to be rinsed and refilled and rinsed again with boiling hot water.

We are trying to figure out how much coffee to how much water for 55 cups. Is the cup designation for an 8 ounce cup size?

This is so subjective.... NYC vs The midwest, the answer will be different. If you look closely at the coffee basket there will be an indicator that will show where the ground should be leveled to. When I made coffee in NJ we used this style and sized pot for all meetings and the "rule of thumb" was 3/4 lb for 55 cups (this was not strong enough for me. Try it at that level and adjust. If it is terribly week you can drain a pitcher of coffee then add another cup of new grounds to the basket and pour over the grounds. Good luck

Coffee to water ratio

Weak coffee is 2 tsp per cup strong coffee is 3 tsp or 1 Tbls per cup. (3 tsp per Tblsp) 32 Tablespoons = 2 Cups, there are 4 Tblsp per 1/4 cup. If you're confused ( I am from reading my answer) Use 1 cup for weak coffee, two cups for strong or 1 & 1/2 for regular strength coffee. Hope that helps!

How much coffee do you use for 36 cups

The standard is one measuring spoon per cup...if you like your coffee strong, or if your cups are big, double the amount.
