Reel to reel wont record with microphone

Just had Sony TC-377 in for full repairs. While using microphone in either Channel (L or R) no sound is produced in the machine, record needles do not move no matter what the record knob settings are. I have checked the microphone and know that it works. When I go to record, the erase heads are doing their job, but the microphone input is not. am I missing something?

When I put a tape in and press play, the spools will not turn. There is power, but it won't play the tape. It's like the turning spools are stuck .

SOURCE: Repairing or replacing old tape decks

Hi m522posner

There is a surprising interest in "vintage" hifi products these days. Your tape machines probably needs new belts. Check this site out. You can get spares for your tape machine here. Belt kits are $17. He does repairs also, but the transport to and from may be an issue for you. I suggest emailing Bob, he may be able to refer you to someone in CA > I could do the repairs, but I am in Australia. :)

You could have a go at freshening up the belts yourself:)

SOURCE: Sony TC-530 hum in internal amplifier left channel.

Electrolytic capacitors are good at causing hum. You could try replacing some of them, they are not expensive. Otherwise you might have damaged the left channel amp semiconducter, whatever that might be.

SOURCE: I can record on one side only, if I try to record on

It's a 4-channel recorder. That's four recorded channels in the same direction. You COULD use it like a standard 2-channel stereo recorder with bi-directional playback if you recorded only the front tracks. THAT would produce a 1/4-track stereo tape with two sides (directions).

In the photo, the front and back are clearly marked.

Leave the Back Record switches in PB mode.

http://freeservicemanuals.info/en/servicemanuals/viewmanual/Sony/TC200 Go here. when the page opens, click on the TC200 to download the service manual. There are 3 tubes and one transistor in each channel. Test the tubes first. They fail with age. You can still get tubes. You just have to google the tube number to find a seller.

I have a sony TC 530. Fast fwd and rewind work

You need to replace the motor run capacitor. It's a small aluminum can looking thing with three wires right next to the motor; they often leak paraffin wax into the bottom of the case when they overheat. Whether or not yours has leaked it's easy to replace if you can use a soldering iron. Search eBay for a Sony reel to reel 1.5uf 250VAC motor run capacitor - they're less than $15 and come with detailed instructions.

Sony Reel to Reel preamp board.

Hi,

Did you ever get your schematic? I recently got the Model 260 and it has the original owner's manual. I could try scanning the page for you, if you still need the info (if you think that would help you).

Sony TC 530 tape speed problem

If it's slightly faster than normal, that's fine. You'll just need to check the rollers and tighten them slightly as well. They might be loose or sort of that.
