Kenmore side by side refrigerator

The compressor keeps trying to start but then clicks off.  It is the compressor with the little blue Indian head on the label.  I am quite handy, I have found the compressor for $142 at Sears parts, Is it something I can install myself?

That is a Tecumseh compressor and refrigerators are very tricky when it comes to installing a new compressor. It will need a new liquid drier and silver soldered in a tight place. Then the system will need to be put in a absolute vacuum for about 1 hour. The freon will have to be weighed and charged into the refrigerator very carefully as it take only a few ounce's of freon. Too much or too little or just a tiny bubble of outside air will cause the refrigerator not to work. The fact that the old compressor needs removed also raises the question of if the original was a burn out. If it was a burn out then the type of oil the new compressor and the old will need to be considered to determine if more things, like acid neutralizer or filter driers will be needed to insure proper installation. Hope I have helped you, Thanks, Sea Breeze

Not getting cold anymore

Hi, it's either the start device on the compressor or you have a bad compressor. You'll have to pull it away from the wall and take the bottom back panel off to check the compressor. It will likely be real hot to the touch from what you described happening. If there is a little white colored box on the left side take that off and remove the wires, etc. and shake it... if it rattles and debris falls out then that's the problem. It's fairly common and they make a kit to replace it with a better designed part that's real easy to install yourself. If your compressor has a label on it with a blue indian head symbol, then you're out of luck as that brand pretty much sucks and is destroyed by heat. It would mean a new compressor and then you'd be lucky if the new one even worked from the factory. Avoid those Tecumseh compressors at all cost.

Take care

It appears the freezer is not keeping the food cold enough and there is an occasional clicking noise underneath where I'm assuming the compressor is. Could this be some type of relay problem? This is a...

The clicking sound your hearing is the compressor trying to start but is not completing the start cycle or achieving run speed so the KliXon thermal overload is tripping trying to protect the compressor.

This can be caused by a bad start relay / Klixon,
A bad run capacitor or...
The bad news a bad compressor.

Letting it just click click click is not a good thing and will cause more damage. Unplug the unit for about 30 mins and then plug it in see if it starts normally.

There can be yet other issues like a defrosting timer contact problem that got weak / hot and isn't allowing enough amperage through to start the compressor.

Freezer in little fridge doesn't freeze well.

First try with setting the regulator to max.

Is it worth it for me to replace the relay?

Take off the small panel on the back bottom of the fridge.  Mounted to the left side of the compressor is the relay.  It may have a black plastic cover over it that will need to be removed.  It looks like your model # is MSD2756GES if so the part # for the relay is 61006186.  If the compressor is a Tecumpseh, which has a little blue sticker of an indian on it, then I would bet that the compressor is bad.  If it is an Embraco I would try the relay.  Compressors are covered for 5 yrs. from the date of purchase.

Bottom freezer works fine....upper refrigerator has stopped working...

Hard to say with this description of the problem but sounds like your having a problem with the compressor starting consistantly. If it is a tecumpseh compressor it is most likely a problem. Take the back off the refrigerator and there will be sticker on the compressor that will tell what kind it is. Should say either embraco(the good kind) or will have a blue picture of an indian head (tecumpseh).

Frigidaire side by side

The compressor sounds like the start device went bad. When that happens there is the "click" during trying to start, but since it can't the compressor overheats in time and then the thermal overload opens to protect it from overheating. Take the back lower panel off the refer and see if the compressor is really hot to the touch. If you have a little white colored box on the left side of the compressor pull it off and shake it... if it rattles and debris falls out you know it's bad. There is a kit that replaces it and it's real easy to install yourself. If you have a compressor that has a little blue indian head symbol on it however... your compressor is toast. Once they overheat they're done. If you have any other brand name you should be OK with a simple start device change out.

Compressor help

If the compressor is real hot, caused by lack of cooling air and the thermal overload is what's tripping try letting it sit for several hours to cool and try again (clean the front lower coils for proper air flow). If that's not it then you likely have a "start device" failure. The kit comes with the overload and starter. Usually this is the problem BUT if you have a "Tecumseh" brand compressor you're toast. Take the back panel off the fridge and look at the compressor, if you have a little sticker on it with an blue indian head... the compressor is locked up (and even a new one is just as junk as this one). But if you have another brand the little white box on the left could be the problem. Unplug the fridge, unplug the little box (starter) and shake it to see if you hear any rattling or if debris falls out... a sure sign the device is bad.
