We have another laptop and put a flash drive in from a friend. soon after which may not be the problem, the keyboard keys and the built in mouse stop working. can we fix this? and if so could you give a suggestion how?

If you have got a USB receiver for the wireless keyboard and mouse, then the solution might be with the receiver. Normally we know that to play a USB thumb drive, we simply plug in and play. But some model of Acer computer require us to press the button on the thumb drive to activate it. The model I had (an Aspire model) set the press button same as the blicking light bulb. So (a) turn on computer, (b) plug in thumb drive receiver (c) press button on the drive, (d) press "contact" button on the mouse and keyboard. That works for me.

get a new one.. eventually when you get it wet, or debris get in, they short out and their is nothing you can do.

If you have warranty they can fix it for you, but if not, you can take the laptop apart, and clean the contacts of the keyboard youself. Which would be the same thing they would do ("they" the warranty people). But is not sure, you can take it to a repair shop for inspection.

Hello there, this is usually caused by one of three things.
Either something was just plugged in (usually USB) that is interfering that you can just unplug
The computer has locked up for another reason (more in a sec.)
Mainboard could possibly be bad / going bad =(
To test if the computer itself is locked up try plugging in an external USB mouse or keyboard to see if you can get that to work. If it does then that means the keyboard and mouse built in are failing, which again basically means the mainboard is failing.
Hopefully it will be that the computer is completely locked up so when you plug in an external usb mouse or whatever it won't respond. That's easiest to fix.
Please let me know
Thanks
