P4VXASD-R, VIA Apollo P4X266 P4 400MHZ I had decided to go for maximum memory - system was running ok but slow with 256+128 sdram. Ran better with 2 x 256. Bought 2 Kingston " KVR266x64C25-1GB" DDR PC2100 DIMM CL-2.5 as was recommnended thru the Kingston configurator. Neither of these chips will boot. I get three long beeps. These were purchased thru Newegg.
Is there a jumper or anything I should be changing when I change which set of memory slots I will be using. (This is 2 sdram 168 Pin or 2 DDR 184 pin slots). Win 2K SP4.
Just find it hard to believe that both chips are bad -- is there a way to verify the slots work ... since they have not been used before.
Re-seated both modules alone in DDR1 slot
Well you said you used 256+128 and thats lower than 1gb. So try sticking in one of the stick and run it, see how it is. Then try the other, if both are working fine by themself then try cleaning your board with a nonscrathing cloth (or q-tip).
Lastly, just double check if your motherboard runs that kingston type, the pc2100.
As for your memory goes, os 2k can run up to 4gb of ram.

the prior chips the 128 and 256 chips were sdram and used other slots than the ones I am using with the 1G sticks which are DDR.
tried each of the new sticks alone as well as together
Board is pretty clean - did some work on it while waiting for the new sticks. I can't go back and use the older memory because the 256 stick is in another machine and the 128 that I have left is not enough to run win2k - it would take about 15 minutes of hard drive thrashing to get it run my boot utilities like antivirus etc.
