Compaq presario 56000cl won't boot up / red light flashing in the back.

When you press the power button do you hear the fan running, hear the disk drive running, see any lights, do you hear the cd drive click once and see the light come on briefly on the cd drive door? If you see all the aforementioned then it is surely trying to boot. Computers don't boot mainly because of the following problems. 1) Bad Power Cord or Power Supply. 2) Electro Static Buildup. 3) Bad Motherboard 4) Bad boot or system files.
Remove the Power Cord and the battery if it's a laptop. Press and Hold the Power Button for 30 Seconds. Then replace only the Power Cord and try hitting the Power Button. If it boots you had an Electro Static Buildup. If you have boot or system files that are missing or corrupt normally the system will be telling you that on an error message that appears on the screen. Does your system show you anything on the screen when you press the Power Button? If not you have a Power Supply or Motherboard issue.

Could you tell me what has to be done when the only item appearing on the screen is MC70?

Resetting the EDA

There are two reset functions, warm boot and cold boot. A warm boot restarts the EDA by closing all running
programs. A cold boot also restarts the EDA, and also resets the clock. Data saved in flash memory or a memory card is not lost.
Perform a warm boot first. If the EDA still does not respond, perform a cold boot.

Performing a Warm Boot - Soft reset

Hold down the Power button for approximately five seconds. As soon as the EDA starts to boot release the Power button.

Performing a Cold Boot - Hard reset

To perform a cold boot simultaneously press the Power button and the 1 and 9 keys.

How to fix a motherboard that does not turn on at all.

Make sure there is power at the outlet, surge suppressor, power strip. Be sure any connected UPS is on. Try again.

Remove any recently installed hardware and go for boot. If the PC boots, check to make sure that the new hardware does not overload the old power supply - if it does, replace with a higher capacity power supply and go for boot.

Open the PC. Look for indication of power - LEDs, fan, etc. Replace the power cord between the outlet and computer if one is available, and go for boot.

If possible, obtain a power supply tester to determine if the power supply has failed. Replace any failed Power Supply and go for boot.

Disconnect power. Disconnect all non-required cables and accessories. Leave only the power and data cables for power supply, boot drive, video card, mouse, memory and keyboard connected - everything else should be removed (with the exception of the small cables that go to the MoBo headers for LEDs, and switches on the case). Everything means both data and power cables. All controller cards should be removed as well unless using on-board or built-in controllers. Reconnect power and try for Boot.

Add devices, cables, etc one at a time to determine which is causing the fault. A PC that boots and shuts down shortly after could be an indication of overheating / over load. Clean dirt & dust from case, ventilation slots, etc. Make sure all fans spin freely - replace any that do not.

Those are some things to start working on.. hopefully, you'll find the problem and not have to go further. Good luck!
