The green tabs that you have to slide are under the color cartridges, so remove the three color cartridges and you will see three green tabs, to slide the tab across the wire you have to first open the translucent plastic wire cover, then slide the green tab across the wires and return it to it's original position, close the wire covers, replace the color cartridges, and reassemble the printer. All the Best

You may have to slide the green tab multiple times to resolve the drum error.

Drum error. slide green tab in each color - Brother HL4040CN Laser Printer

Try removing all the toner carts and remove the drum unit from the printer. Using the upholstery tool on your home vacuum cleaner, clean all over the drum unit being careful not to directly touch the drum surfaces (they scratch very easily causing permanent marks to print) also vacuum out the inside of the printer. It is likely that dust is preventing correct charge build on the drum. Also make sure the green slide tabs are placed back at the home position at the side of the drum unit. Re-assemble and test.

Error message "put the black toner cartridge back in"

I got this same error message on a newly acquired Brother DCP-7040 that I purchased used off of ebay.

As I was troubleshooting this unit (that I bought untested off of ebay - hey gambling has paid off handsomely for me many times before!), this error message kept popping up.

I checked the COUNTERS (page & Drum life) and found out that the DRUM had 0% life left. BUT, the reason it showed ZERO was because this unit did not have any drum! The toner cartridge (TN-360) needs to sit WITHIN the drum (DR-360) on this DCP-7040 unit, as well as in models DCP-7030, MFC-7340, MFC-7345C, and MFC-7440N.

So perhaps some of these "put the black toner cartridge back in" problems could be related to the DRUM (or lack thereof). A possible tipoff (since the toner cartridge actually does slide into the unit much like other units that do not use Brother's DRUM carrier) seems to be the relative ease with which the toner cartridge slides into the DCP-7040 and really doesn't seem to "lock" into position real firmly.

My brother MFC9840cdw has an error message that says, "drum error, slide the green tab on each of the colored drum units. Refer to the users guide". I have tried sliding the green sliders several times. I...

The guy that replied solved the problem. He rocks and I can't believe that brother does have a large posting on this issue. Sham on them:
ben2913 did the job "This is NOT the solution to this error code. The code is telling you that the Corona wire must be cleaned. Remove all 4 color drums. Look down into the tray that you removed them from and you will see 4 green tabs. Open the plastic cover that protects the corona wire and move the green tab back and forth several times. After you have done this with all 4, reinstall the drums, close the machine front and everything will work fine again."

Newly set-up Brother color laser printer displays drum error.

The slides you are moving are for the drum units, you could try using canned air to blow in the same area that the sliders slide across, if that doesn't help you may need a new drum unit..

Toner/drum problems

This seems to happen some of the time. Brother has an FAQ for this:

1. Verify the toner cartridge is installed correctly by following the
steps listed below:

a. Open the front cover.

b. Lift the drum unit slightly and pull it out. Place the drum unit on
adrop cloth or large piece of disposable paper to avoid spilling and
scattering the toner.

c. Remove the toner cartridge from the drum by holding down the lock
lever (blue tab) on the left side of the drum unit and lift the toner
out.
*Handle the toner cartridge carefully. If toner scatters on your hands
or clothes, immediately wash it off with cold water.

d. Gently rock the toner cartridge from side to side five or six times
to distribute the toner evenly inside the cartridge.

e. Place the toner cartridge into the drum (be sure it clicks into
place).

f. Clean the primary corona wire inside the drum unit by gently sliding
the blue tab on the top of the cartridge from right to left several
times. Return the blue tab to the home position before reinstalling the
drum unit assembly.

g. Reseat the drum unit into the machine.

h. Close the front cover.

2. If the message "Toner Life End" continues to appear on the display,
contact Brother Customer Service at 1-877-Brother (276-8437) Monday
through Friday, 9:00am - 7:00pm EST, excluding holidays.
