Nikon Suber Coolscan 8000 ED does not show up on my computer

I have been using my Nikon Suber Coolscan 8000 ED for some time now with Vuescan. Yesterday it would not show the preview or scan. Now I can not see my scanner. I checked the firewire cable etc. Do I need to send it in somewhere to get fixed?

You need to install the drivers before the pc will recognize that there is a scanner connected to it. I would also suggest using the software that came with the scanner instead of just a program that you already have in your computer.

Here is a link to the users manual with the specs and software required to run the scanner correctly below. You can usually get a copy of just any software from CNET's website (www.cnet.com). Try locating the name of the software that the manual says came with your scanner and then go to CNET's website and find a trial version or free version and download then install it on your computer before connecting the scanner. You need to make sure that you do not connect the scanner before installing the drivers and/or software, so if you have it connected now remove the cable.

Windows 7 does not run scanners the way that Windows Xp & Vista do. Your scanner may be set up correctly now before chasing down the driver and/or software. You might want to check using the method listed below before making any changes as noted above.

With XP, the scanners software would be installed on the pc before using and you would see a picture of the scanner with the name on your desktop. To scan you just double click the ICON and follow the prompts.

With Windows 7, to use your scanner you need to click on the round globe on the bottom left of your screen (the one with the flag in it) and then go to "devices and printers" and click on that too.

Find the name of your scanner and right click with your mouse on top of it to get a drop down list of choices. In that drop down list find "scan" and click on it and you will get a drop down list of choices with scanning preferences. Choose your preferences and click scan or "ok" at the bottom. Thats how you scan something in Windows 7. Maybe you were opening the software and trying to scan something that way? After the scanner scans your image, it will number it and take you to where it stores the default scans. If you double click on the document or picture in this area, it will open it in your default software. If you have your computer set to use Vue Soft, then double clicking on the picture or document after scanning it will open it in that software.

Hope this helps?

Hello sir!

Better check first if your system was able to detect your scanner.
See if the Film Scanner is detected on the FireWire Device Tree,
go to: Apple > About This Mac > click the More Info button > then select FireWire in the Hardware section.
If so, then open the Image Capture Application and see if you can select the Nikon Film Scanner?

If you can not find your scanner...Please disconnect all Firewire devices.. and leave only the film scanner connected on your system before installing the driver software.

Hi! My computer (Macbook pro) doesn't seem to recognize my Nikon Coolscan IV software and I get the following message

You've not said what the message is but I suspect that the software is too old to be used on the macbook if it is running OS X 10.7 (Lion) or if you are running snow leopard, it may be a non-intel version of the software. It may be asking you to instal rosetta which would be on your snow leopard instal disk.

If the Nikon website does not have updated software you could try vuescan which according to this page http://www.hamrick.com/vuescan/nikon_coolscan_iv_ed.html does work with the film scanner and you can download a demo version which you can trial before you buy. Hope this helps.

I have an intel macintosh I have nikon coolscan 8000 scanner I have leopard, latest update I have nikon 4.0.2 update for scanner I can not get it to work. I double click on Nikon icon on my dock,...

Nikon 4.0.2 isn't supported on 10.5

I suggest you look at VueScan which does work under 10.5 and 10.6 with your scanner, and they have a free download to test first

Firewire. USB2

Either or is my understanding- the scanner will accept either. I can see no need for both.
