Solution depends on what CDs you got from Dell. Generally you are best off doing a Windows XP repair install from the CD. Follow these instructions and you should get a working version of windows and still keep all your programs, documents and settings.
http://www.tweakxp.com/article36955.aspx

If you have a system restore CD you could loose all your data and settings so use this carefully.

You could try typing sfc /scannow into the run box (Start, Run) and this should repair damaged files. Errors with the internet connection can be caused by viruses or spyware. Try a trial version of Nod32 from http://www.eset.com/download/index.php
and see if that helps.

Most computers you buy from vendors come with what is called a "recovery disk" it is a disk that restores the operating system to how it was when it was originally shipped. Before using the recovery disk make sure to backup all important files to another location (to cd/dvd or in this case to an external hard drive, usb drive or other computer). Once all important files and information is backed up use the recovery cd to recover the operating system.

If the recovery cd has been lost or was never shipped, call Dell and ask for their advice. If they are unable to to send a recovery cd for your system or support for that system has been discontinued, proceed to a local PC repair shop and be prepared to pay some $$$ for them to do what I suggested.

Good luck.

Dell 8400 Boots to Black Error Screen in XP States to reinstall System 32

This might be caused by hard-drive failure. You should run hard drive test from BIOS to make sure hard drive is ok. You can access BIOS by pressing F2 during start up, from there start hard disk self test and wait for it to complete.

If hard drive is ok after test, insert in your original Windows installation media and reinstall OS.

Dell dimension 5100 will not boot, numbers 2 and 4 illuminated on front panel

According to the manual this indicates a possible failure of the graphics card. The solutions from your manual: • If the computer has a graphics card, remove the
card, reinstall it (see page 71), and then restart
the computer.
• If the problem still exists, install a graphics card
that you know works and restart the computer.
• If the problem persists or the computer has
integrated graphics, contact Dell (see page 116).

The manual is available as a PDF at:
http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/SYSTEMS/dim5100/en/om/T8144bk2.pdf

I hope this helps.

How do I return our Dimension 5100 Dell Desktop back to it's original state? Lost the recovery CD.

Have you tried restoring your operating system to a previous restore point?
To do this click on start- all programs - accessories - system tools - system restore. Then choose a date from the calendar which corresponds to a time before you began to experience problems on your PC. Follow the on-screen instructions to restore your PC to its original state.
Note that a system restore will remove any programs which were installed AFTER the selected restore point date.
Hope this helps.

Ethernet Controller

I had to reinstall XP like 6 months ago, on a dimensions 3000. just reinstall the drivers. here i think this is all of the drivers.
just start "Dell Driver Reset Tool.EXE"
and run "Sownd driver for 3000.EXE"
driver for vga "Intel(R) 82865G Graphics Controller.exe"

and the Ethernet driver "Intel PRO100 VE Network Connection.exe"
Click Here for a zip of all the drivers.
