Question about ASUS Eee PC 701SD 8G Notebook

1 Answer

I started up the Eee 701 netbook and it found 18 updates to the OS/software installed. I started to install them. During the process, the downloads/installs started to hang. So I restarted the pc and it fails to bring up the desktop applications now. Any help?

Thanks for the prompt reply. The clicks on the start menu/orb is unresponsive - i.e. the cursor arrow has a circle that spins indicating it is doing some processing. So I guess that option might be ruled out, right?

I'll try the various options suggested and keep folks posted to help retain the knowledge for other users. Thanks.

Sure. I will keep you posted. Thanks. And BTW, am running the GNU linux OS (*not* XP) to another query from another member. Thanks

Following the advice, I simply created a bootable image on a USB thumb drive and followed the system restoration procedure described in the manual that came along. It worked flawlessly. My netbook is now updated with the patches as well.

Now, am thinking of moving on to xubuntu as it gives a true unix look & feel as opposed to the Asus OS that came with it. Thanks everyone.

Hi there.
You can try and resolve this problem by performing a system restore.
Click on the start menu/orb, select all programs, then accessories, then system tools and system restore.
Open the program and take the computer back to before it installed the updates.
If system restore is not in the menu, type rstrui in the search bar.

I also recommend you leave the computer to finish its update process because it can take some time to complete.

Please post back if anymore help is required.

Good luck

If the computer is unresponsive restart the computer, as its starting up hit F8 and boot the machine in safe mode, then perform the system restore.

    Keep me posted please.

Oh dear, you have no choice but to reinstall the OS I'm afraid, Linux don't provide "system restore" with their OS's.
If you have not got a recovery CD provided with the laptop you can download it from here >>>>>>>>

Is an Asus Eeepc 701 Linux OS & firfox browser compatible with a wireless N wifi router?

Yes, but the netbook only has a G card, so it won't be able to perate at the higher speed, and you'll have to make sure the router is in Mixed mode.

Eeepc 701 won't restart after reinstalling OS. reinstalled original oS software, dis an apt-get update, updates continued for quite a time, then had to reboot. But since then, nothing, eeepc will not even...

you probably have the solid state hard drive (4gb)... its not big enough to hold all the updates .. unfortunately the operating system comes with "auto update" turned on ... it will download updates until the drive is full then will crash .. one way to resolve this is to kill the internet so it cant log on ... you can disconnect or turn off your wifi or if you are fast enough you can use Fn F2 (turns off wifi) .. just watch the wifi light to make sure its off at boot .. there is a lag in response so its a bit tricky once booted you can turn off "auto update" ...then you can turn your wifi or internet back on .. manually update only things you know you have room for .. if your 701 has a CF card slot (like my eeepc 900a . then that can be used as additional hard drive space ... during installation i made that the boot drive (advanced) (of course you cant remove it after that).. the new eeebuntu4 beta is a wonderful upgrade for the system .. but i could only get it working by using thhe CF drive as above.. if you havent already done so you can make a bootable USB jump drive .. you can run Ubuntu off that as well as install from that ...change the boot order in cmos boot first from the Jump dirve ...

How do i upgrade the OS of eee PC 900A to a netbook ubuntu 9.10?

download the image of ubuntu put it on a stick here you have two option uninstal the old OS or update if you want to update:
To upgrade from Ubuntu 9.04 on a desktop system, press Alt+F2 and type in "update-manager -d" (without the quotes) into the command box. Update Manager should open up and tell you: New distribution release '9.10' is available. Click Upgrade and follow the on-screen instructions.

To upgrade from Ubuntu 9.04 on a server system: install the update-manager-core package if it is not already installed; edit /etc/update-manager/release-upgrades and set Prompt=normal; launch the upgrade tool with the command sudo do-release-upgrade; and follow the on-screen instructions.more info on:

EeePC 701 that no longer detects wireless access points

some eeepcs have an auto-down load facility that upgrades certain items(firefox for example) andother items ,i found once i had upgraded these items the wi-fi wouldnt enable as efficiently as before--i can't point you to specific code but if you re-install the OS(Linux Xandros) from base and switch off the updates,by going to "settings" then choose "installing/removing software" then choose "preferences" you can partially stop these auto-downloads and from a new base configuration install you might find your wi-fi works again.
press F9 whilst booting to get to the install OS screen ,you will have three choices whichever you choose (highlight) then press "E" then press "B" and this is how you re-install
