If this is the case with a some keys, its very likely your keyboard has a spill damage.
Some liquid, maybe coffee or soda drink spilled on it?
Best bet is get a keyboard replacement.

First of all check the keys carefully to see that no key is depressed(especially Function and Toggle keys) ok. Drag your pc to Safe Mode by pressing F8 key before it boots to Windows. Allow to stabilize on the desktop and try the keys again. If it doesn't work properly here, then I'm afraid it has to be taken to the specialist. Good luck.

The following keys have both letters and numbers on them (U,I, O,J K, L) for some reason i am not able to use these key as the letter function to spell out a word they seem to be frozen in the number...

It sounds like your function key is either stuck or broken. Try prying the key off (carefully) with a knife or something to check if you can see the damage. You can also try cleaning it (search google for keyboard cleaning procedures). If it's broken, you may need to purchase a new one. They can be found easily on e-bay.

My Electronic crossword puzzles by RadioShack comes on but will not do anything. I just put in new batteries. I do not have my manual.

Adjusting The Display

To increase or decrease the display's contrast so it is easier to read,
hold down FUNCTION, then press /\ or \/ on the cursor pad.

Playing The Game

1. Press ON/OFF to turn on the game.

If you have not worked a puzzle since installing or replacing the
batteries, CROSSWORD MASTER appears. Otherwise, the display is as it
was when the game was turned off.

2. To start a new puzzle at any time, press FUNCTION and 1 (I), 2 (O), or
3 (P) at the same time. 1 is for beginner-type games, and 2 and 3
increase in difficulty. NEW GAME LEVEL 1, 2, OR 3 Y/N appears.

3. Press Y to start a new puzzle. A crossword grid with flashing cursor
appears (O).

Otherwise, press N. The display appears as it was when you pressed
FUNCTION and 1, 2, or 3.

4. Press (or hold down) /\, \/, <, or > on the cursor pad to move the
cursor around the puzzle.

5. With the flashing cursor in the desired location, press ? to see the
clue(s) for the word(s) in that location.

Any letters you already entered appear, along with a dash for each
missing letter. The number of letters appears in parentheses - for
example, (5) for a solution with 5 letters. If the solution includes
more than one word, the number of letters for each word appears in the
format - for example, (5, 3, 4) for a solution with three words.

If the flashing cursor appears at the junction of two words (across
and down), both clues appear, across first, then down.

6. Press ? again to return to the crossword display, then use the letter
keys to type your answer.

If the flashing cursor was at the junction of two words and you enter
the first letter of your answer, two small arrows appear in the
adjacent across and down squares. Before typing the rest of your
answer, press > or \/ (across or down) on the cursor pad to indicate
which word you are entering.

Press /\ on the keyboard to erase the letter just above, and < to
erase the letter to the left of, the flashing cursor.

To erase a word, hold down FUNCTION and press WORD DELETE (Z).

To spell check the puzzle at any time, hold down FUNCTION and press
SPELL (T). The [+] symbol indicates the location of each incorrect
letter.

When you complete a crossword correctly, GAME COMPLETED appears.

7. Press ON/OFF to turn off the game. The current puzzle is saved.

On my laptop in green are symbols and numbers, for example letter L has a green 3, when I try to type a word with the letter L a 3 appears, how do I change this? At the moment I have my old keyboard...

if you press the L key and the number 3 comes up. you likely have the num lock on.

is different for every computer but usually you can deactivate the num lock by pressing 2 keys at the same time.
the fist key is usually the key labeled (Fn) and the other key is usually a function key (the ones with F an a number), the way to find which is the other key is to look at the keyboard and try to find one that has a simble that looks like a tiny numerical key-pad
press both keys and a light that signals that the num lock is on should go off. at that point you should have your l and any other letters again typeable.

good luck

What does the insert key do?

Press and the text you type will over write what ever you have on the screen. This is typically used in most applications to "type over" existing text without moving the other letters/numbers/characters around.

This is my example of how the insert key works.
hit the insert key and position your cursor at the "w" in works.
Now type WOW!!.
You should now have:
This is my example of how the insert key WOW!!.

Clever these programmers. :)

Keep in mind it depends on the application you are running also.
Have fun!

When trying to text incorrect letters appear

There should be an option somewhere when you are in the message menu on how to switch from the text mode that tries to finish your words for you to the text mode where you have to push the button however many times to get the the single letter you want. Although if you are in the auto finish mode you can simply ignore what it's suggesting and continue spelling out the word yourself if you want. example: hit 9 6 8 one time each to spell the word "you"..buy if your trying to be able to short hand text like "thk u" your gonna have to look around in your text mode settings.
