Check the Drivers. You may have a problem there. Go to Control Panel/Devices/DV/CDROM drives. Update the Drivers from there.

Testimonial: "I thought it was the drivers as well. It was actualy in the GPO."

SOURCE: CD / DVD player not listed as device on Windows Explorer

Try physically removing the player and fire up the laptop. Power down the laptop, replace the player and power back up. If that doesn't help, see if BIOS recognizes it.
If that doesn't work, get back to me.

SOURCE: CD / DVD player not listed as device on Windows Explorer

I also have the same problem. I've tried all the above plus some added info. The floppy still works when I swap it with the DVD. Occasionally it works for a short time right after a hard boot but soon after it appears to uninstall. I have searched the net for answers to this problem without success. I tried the registry correction without avail. There has been some online comments that the problem appeared after an auto update from uSoft. I believe the problem is software or firmware related.

SOURCE: R40 Thinkpad CD drive

I also have an IBM R40 with a combo drive that showed the same symptoms. I switched the drive with two another two which I can assure that work 100% correctly, and the same problem happens. First the drive wasn't detected some of the times, or it got randomly "disconnected" while the laptop was on. Nowadays (about 1 year ago), the drive never gets detected, not by the BIOS or by the operating system (Linux, but also tried on Windows), even so, If I don't keep the drive disconnected, when the laptop boots the BIOS hangs for a long time like it was trying to detect the drive, but it doesn't. It turns out that is a system board problem. Hope this helps you on finding the solution. Regards

CD drive not recognized error code 0F00.281A

Your CD drive or DVD drive is missing or not recognized by Windows or other programs, so you cannot play or access a CD or DVD. This issue might have occurred after you installed, uninstalled, or updated a program

Click Start, click My Computer, and then see whether the drive is listed.
Is the drive listed? loadTOCNode(2, 'moreinformation');
If the drive is listed, try to play or access a CD or DVD.
If you can play or access a CD or DVD, you are finished with this article.

If you cannot play or access a CD or DVD, you may have to reinstall some programs. Some programs might not be able to use your CD or DVD drive until you reinstall those programs. If the problem occurs again when you install or uninstall those programs, contact the manufacturer of the program to see if an update is available that solves the problem. Some examples of programs that might be affected are:
  • iTunes software by Apple
  • Nero software by Nero Inc
  • Roxio Creator software by Sonic Solutions
  • Zune software by Microsoft
After reinstalling your programs, if you can play or access a CD or DVD, you are finished with this article.

If you still cannot play or access a CD or DVD,

If the drive is not listed, remove and reinstall the existing drivers.

Device- SONY CD-RW CRX320EE It is detected by the OS(Xp-64bit). Device Status- working properly. Disks(any type) when inserted not detected . More over i can access the drive when i double click it even...

make sure it is not a DVD disk you are trying to insert into your Drive because your Drive is a CD-RW will not read DVD nor burn onto it.

Your disk may be damaged or corrupt and the drive cannot read it.
your drive may need a firmware update from Sony.
use this link below to access Sony's website to download drivers.

Acer aspire 5102 with philips sdvd8821 dvdram drive

alright. bubul78, your post is in no way shape or form a solution for the problems given by other users. I too have a acer laptop with the philips dvd drive in it, device manager detects the dvd reader and says it is running with no problems. i can hear the drive read the cd when inserted, tho when trying to access the drive through my computer the window hangs at the hourglass for a min or so, then says please insert a cd. only solution is that something is physically wrong with the drive. ok so solution found, replace the cd drive. but where is acers sight to order replacement parts? poor site navigation in my opinion.

My dvdrom drive wont let me access the drive

ITs a dvd rom drive. It will not burn blank dvds
in order to burn, it has to cd-r/cd-rw/dvd-r/dvd-rw. If a drive cannot write to a blank disc, it will eject it. Rom drives read only (Read Only Memory), Combo drives- burn cd's only read dvd's, and super drives both read and write to cds and dvds.
