Question about Philips DVP642 DVD Player

2 Answers

DVP642/ 37 DVD player says "NO DISK" with any disk.

I've seen two postings of people with this same problem. I've had the DVD player for a little less that two years and all the sudden it reads "NO DISK" to any DVD or CD that I play. Cleaning the lens didn't help. Once in a while it will play a disk, but it will soon freeze, then go and repeat til it finally stops. How can this be fixed? I really don't want to have to send it in somewhere. HELP!

I have the same problem... one minute it was working fine, and then it has now completely frozen, doesnt even let me open the disk. The menu is still enabled, and can access options.... but none which says open stuck disk ;-)

Dont know if I can risk losing my brand new DVD inside it now...

also, cannot locate any hole for emergency eject!!

Exact same problem with my Sanyo; approx 1 yr old; I really can't afford to buy another player & extremely frustrated:

---Had watched 2 rental movies with zero problems THEN IMMEDIATELY popped in 3rd DVD which gave occasional 'glitches' {the scatterered little square pixels occasionally on screen} --BUT THEN toward end of disk it completely freezed up ---both the disk AND the player locked up; finally had to turned off & Unplug//re-plug in just to get the disk out---BUT the Player is 'stuck' saying "NO DISK".no matter what disk I put in it. Appreciate any realistic possible soultions to try.

I've already tried resetting the region, unplugging it, plugging it back in, changing the settings, pretty much everything remotely related to fixing this player. Still get the same "No disc" message. No blinking red light, but it seems this is the second most common problem, and one without a solution (The blinking red light problem has a few solutions).

I'm just about to give up. It seems that with this DVD player, you either get lucky and get a amazingly easy to use player, or a nightmare that will drive you insane until you find a place to recycle the empty shell that once was a godsend.

Usually if there is a NO DISC error, and the lens is verified clean, there is either dust in the laser assembly (use a can of compressed air to clean it out) or a loose laser assembly cable. Also check to make sure the lens can bob (wiggle around), and that it can slide back and forth.

The emergency eject is underneath, its a small slot. Insert a toothpick at one end and slide to the other end to open the tray.

I've have the same problem. I took the cover off clean the lens and thought that fixed it, but it happened again a week later. This time I slowly slid the laser toward the rear of the case, then tried putting the disc in again. The laser moves across the disk and it starts spinning (I noticed before that the disk never spins and displays no disk). So cleaning the lens only helped because I moved the laser in the process causing it to start moving. I cleaned the bar and the rail that the laser slides on with WD40 (because that's all I had handy). We'll see if that does the trick, if not I'll Velcro the cover on for easy access until I can afford a 1080 up-convert player (in this economy I'm not spending unnecessary money).

Did you get anywhere with this? I have a similar problem with a DVD/PVR from Woxter. I've tried different cables and changed many of the settings without luck. I've seen a couple of posts which suggest changing country and sound settings (to PCM), so I'll check them out before I call in a repairman to check out the circuitry around the sound output.

My atapi dvd a dh20a4p suddenly stopped reading pirated cd/dvd but will read original/legit dvd's

This is an age factor of a DVD player that it stops reading pirated discs but at the same time it can read legit or original discs. I recommend that you take your PC to a technician or an expert who can provide maintenance service to it by cleaning and doing a little or so tuning or some times little or so repair which will add life to your PC and the devices it contains. If this does not work out for your DVD player you should consider that the time of replacing your DVD player has arrived.

DVD appears to not be reading or recognizing discs

Unfortunately your DVD drive mechanism looks to have bit the big one.

You can try taking it apart, removing the top of the drive and cleaning the lense. Work it up and down. Use a q-tip with a little squirt of windex on it.

Reassemble and try it again. If you get the same results, it's time for a new DVD player.
