The battery might be fried. Does it work while it is on the charger? If it does, then that means that it is fried. If that's the case, take it to the Apple store, and they can either replace the battery for you, or they can replace it.

Get one of these to sole your problem. ipod change their charging circuit I found one at Walmart in the ipod accessories section. Its called the Passport home dock adapter. http://www.scosche.com/products/productID/1695
- this accessory supports charging for the iPhone 3G, iPod touch (Gen 2) and iPod nano (Gen4) with most iPod docking stations - Snaps into any iPod universal dock and accepts universal dock adapters
the ipod of the 4th generation does only charge in USB mode and the Harman & kardon speaker only supports I link charge mode(fire wire 1394) so i bought an awsome sounding machine wich does not charge my ipod nano.
however i must say that i have a solution, when you put the USB cable in the back of the H&K, you can charge the nano with a charging device of an ipod.
You need a new battery for your iPod. you can view a free instructional video on battery replacement at the first web address posted below. the second one is a cheap site I found for purchasing iPod parts.

Unfortunately, the iPod nano only ships with a USB 2.0 cable, which alienates many Mac users who only have USB 1.1 and Firewire ports. Although Apple offers no official support, you can both charge and sync your iPod nano, albeit slowly, using USB 1.1. Or, you can charge your iPod nano, but not sync, using Firewire.
