Is there any way to align print head on HP 4385 without the scanner?

The scanner on this all-in-one no longer works, but I would like to continue using the printer itself. Unfortunately it cannot auto-align the heads without using the scanner, and the print quality keeps getting worse and worse. Is there a manual work-around?

SOURCE: HP L7680 Print Head Problem

Sometimes the circuit strip that sits at the back of the printhead carriage is the problem due to moisture, ink soiling, etc...

To clean these you need some cotton buds (like you use to clean your ears) and gently clean the area at the back of the printhead carriage (where the printheads slot into).

This removes any ink, or moisture that could be causing a short circuit or similar.

Place a soft clean tissue paper over the cartridge print head and leave for about eight minutes. You can secure it with the aid of a rubber band. It should be held firm ok. If the tissue paper is not dampened by ink then the cartridge would have gone bad or the ink dried. You also know that they have expiry date and could go bad while yet in the packaging b/c it has expired. Good luck

SOURCE: HP 6000 Won't print with yellow cartridge

Try this :

Take out the power cable from the back of the printer keep on tapping the power button for 30 secs ; then plug it back.
Take out the catridges clean them with a Lint free cloth (copper contacts); also clean the catridge slot of the printer; put in back the catridges ;
Unplug the power cable from the back of the printer; press and hol down the (#) and the (6) button simultaneously with one hand and with the other hand put in back the power cable; and then release the (#) and (6) button;
It will perform a reset on the printer
IF still then it doesn't work then the catridge slot's copper contacts has gone bad and need to replace

The trailing cable is probably runing the printhead. Try replacing the printhead and trailing cable together. Parts available at: http://www.lpscomputer.com/c-622-designjet-5000-5500.aspx

My printer window on the HP PSC 2175 continues to read: 'Press Enter to align cartridges' I have done this 5 or 6 times and the message will not go away. How do I fix this problem so it will print?

Perform the following steps to align the ink cartridges:
  1. Disconnect the power cord from the unit, wait five seconds, and then plug it back in. This will reinitialize the unit.
  2. Print another alignment test page. If the Press Enter to align message is not currently on the front panel display, complete the following steps to print an alignment page:
    1. Press Setup or Menu on the front panel (depending on the model).
    2. Press the right arrow button (>) until Maintenance or Tools is displayed, and then press Enter or OK (depending on the model).
    3. Press the right arrow button (>) until Align Print Cartridges is displayed, and then press Enter or OK (depending on the model).
  3. To determine if the automatic alignment is functioning correctly, look into the output tray as the alignment page is printing; a blue light should be visible periodically on the page as the cartridges move back and forth. If this light is not visible, the product will not be able to align the cartridges and will require service. Service the product.
  4. If the blue light is visible and the alignment pages are printing correctly, but the alignment pages still fails, there still may be a hardware problem with the unit.
    • If there are no other printing problems and you wish to continue, use the information in the Bypassing the ink cartridge alignment section below to bypass the alignment. The information from last successful alignment will be used.
    • If the message keeps reappearing or other print quality problems occur, service the product.
Models with a semi-automatic print cartridge alignment Some HP products have a semi-automatic alignment process. These models do not have an additional sensor and will print two pages for the alignment process instead of one. The alignment page must be placed on the scanner glass or into the automatic document feeder (HP Officejet V series) and scanned.
  1. Disconnect the power cord, wait five seconds, and then plug it in. This reinitializes the product and forces the scanner to calibrate again.
  2. Examine the scanner glass and white scan backing. Clean the scanner glass and scan backing if they are not clean. To clean the scanner glass and scan backing, use a soft cloth towel slightly dampened with clean water.
  3. With the product turned on, open the scanner cover and check the bulb assembly. If the scanner bulb is not lit, the product must be serviced.
  4. Verify that the alignment page is placed correctly on the scanner glass or in the ADF (if the product has one). Place the printed side down.
  5. 5. Make a copy of the alignment page. The unit will make a copy even if the alignment message is displayed. Compare the copy to the original. If vertical lines appear in the copy, check to see if the scanner assembly requires cleaning. If cleaning the scanner assembly does not correct the problem, service the product.
  6. 6. Use the information in the Bypassing the ink cartridge alignment section below to bypass the alignment. Operate the HP All-in-One to determine if there are other problems. The unit should be serviced if other error messages or problems occur or if alignment problems occur every time the ink cartridges are changed.
To bypass the ink cartridge alignment: Press and hold the Setup button, and then press Options (or Copy Options ).

Typically when this happens you either need to go into the printer properties and align the print head or if your printer is a modle where the print head in not attached to the ink you need to get a new print head. to be able to tell if your print head is attache just look at the bottom of the cartridge if you see a metal looking part then you have a bult on print head but if you see ink then your print head is built into your printer.
In most cases the print head is more expensive than a new printer so it is not worth replacing. As far as the scanner issue look under your start menu for an option that says HP under that see if there are any programs called setup or scanner if you do not see it there check in the row of icons that are to the left of the clock on your task bar, place the mouse over them one by one and you will get a message that telle you what they are. If you find one for the HP printer/scanner right click on it and see what your options are. This program will allow you to set up yous scanner. Most HP scanners have to have some kind of program running in the task bar in order for the buttons to work.

If you do not see any of these things I recommend that you re install the software that came with your scanner

Align page message

I have an OfficeJet 5780 and I have to do the alignment also. The allignment page it prints should have instructions on it. Just put it in the scanner and press "Enter". It needs to scan it to align the print heads.

This is from the manual on their website:

The HP Officejet prompts you to align cartridges every time you install or
replace a print cartridge. Aligning the cartridges ensures high-quality output.
To align the print cartridges when prompted:
1 Press Enter on the front panel.
An align cartridges (test pattern) page prints.
2 Load the align cartridges page face down in the ADF between the paperwidth
guides and press the Enter button again.
3 Recycle or discard the page.
