Question about Western Digital My Book Essential Edition (WDG1U5000N) 500 GB Hard Drive

1 Answer

Cannot retrieve data from my 500G WD

I have two questions:

1. My WD makes strange clicking noise and about 10 seconds later, the noise would stop and nothing would show up on my desktop (MAC) or in Windows Explorer. Who should I turn to to try to fix it?

2. If all I want to do is to have it reformatted, (I saved the data on a second hard drive, just in case something like this would happen) and do not wish to retrieve the data, how much would it cost to get it done?

My WD My Book Premium (320 GB) had the same clicking problem. It now refuses to start up. The harddisk starts turning and then after some hard clicks stops again. This happens each time I try to connect it.

I am afraid this is a hardware failure... still would like to retreive the data that it on the disk. Can this be repaired?

Hi,

For your 2 queries:
1. The clicking sound is indicative of a hardware failure or the start of one. Considering having it fixed would simply be buying a bit of time and prolonging the inevitable.  The drive even when repaired tends to be suspect and would defeat its very purpose;

2. You can perform the reformat yourself. If the WD would show as a removable drive in your Windows Explorer, right clicking on the assigned drive letter would give you the option to Format it.

Alternately, it might be to your advantage to simply replace the WD. In some instances, it is also possible to just replace the actual HD inside the enclosure.

Hope this be of some help/idea. Pls post back how things turned up or should you need additional information.

Good luck and kind regards.

Help with noise problem

Hi,
Any strange noise like excessive clicking, grinding, some weird sounds etc. actually indicate a failing hard drive.
Failing hard drives often show warning signs of their imminent demise. If you're lucky enough to see or hear one of these signs, stop what you're doing and immediately back up your data. They say prevention is better than cure so if your computer's hard disk is making some strange clicking sounds, BACK UP YOUR DATA IMMEDIATELY (As the drive is not operating smooth and may fail anytime).
After making backup of your important data on CD/DVD or External Drive, you may scan the drive for surface errors, format it and see if it works properly or not. It would be better if you seek professional assistance for examination of the disk.

Hard drives are mostly under warranty for at least one year. Claim warranty, if possible.

Hope it helps! Good Luck! Thanks for using Fixya!

The machine made a slight squeek noise each time it slowed down and then started up again (durring the wash cycle) We also noticed a strange odor. It was almost a asbestos burning type of smell. Then later...

It probably mean the spin brake has failed. If everything else is functioning OK and it is not making anymore strange noises it will be OK however when you open the lid(during spin) if it takes more than 10 seconds to stop then the brake should be replaced. If you need anything else please let me know.

Amana AFD2535DEW freezer/refrigerator with intermittent tempurature swings

I had the same issue. It was the relay overload which essentially provides the extra boost to get the compressor going. The switch tries for about 10 seconds before giving up and then retries 3 - 4 minutes later. In the early stages of failure, eventually it will work and the compressor will kick on. But eventually the switch will fail and will just cycle through the 10 second attempt every 3 to 4 minutes. The part is about $35 - part number 67005560.
