Fan in freezer is making a real bad sound...... griding like it may be struggling to to stay running

This can be caused by frost accumulation on or aroundthe freezer fan Icing . And due to this no cooling will be in fridge compartment.
Unplug power and . defrost it. And after some times, switch on fridge.
This is due to auto defrost switch malfunction. keep temp setting at 5 degree and check auto defrost (if your fridge having that option) is working. If not you have to replace PCB. Thanks.

Refrigerator won't cool less than 52 degrees

I can tell you if it can be fixed by you or if you need service. Just answer a few questions as we go through this. Pull away from wall and remove the lower panel. Feel top of compressor and see if too hot to keep your hand there or cool. Let me know if freezer fan and fan below are running. Answer those and that will help me answer your questions, Thanks Sea Breeze

Freezer not working in garage top mount freezer on refrigerator

Sears is technically correct. It wouldn't work with the old coolant either. The principle is simple. The refrigerator is the same temp as your garage - it is not running. It must be in a 60 degree room to work properly. The sensor to turn it on is in the fresh food compartment, and it never calls for cooling; therefore it appears you freezer only is out - but they both work together. Hope this helps!

Motor runs, some ice at top level, but temp is at 50-60 degrees.

Defrost the freezer. Door being ajar allows moisture to build on the freezer coil and stops air circulation. In frost free units this condition should clear itself after about 8-12 hours max. Locating and advancing the timer by rotating the clutch head screw clockwise slowly until you hear one click. This will start the automatic defrost manually.
