YOU DONT ADAPT IT, U REPLACE THE RECEPTACLE OR USE THE CORRECT PRONG CORD. THE CORDS ARE NOT THAT EXPENSIVE FROM 20 TO 30 BUCKS AND EVEN CHEAPER ON LINE. IF U HAVE A NEWER HOME IT IS MANDATED BY LAW THAT YOU USE 4 PRONG CORD NOT 3 PRONG UNLESS THE HOME CAME WITH A 3 PRONG OUTLET.

SOURCE: used kenmore stackable washer and dryer P/N 145781-000A

was the machine working when you bought it? if there's 240 available, then a problem is in the machine NOT your wiring. both motors, the dryer and wash motor may be 240 volts OR 120 volts - a hot leg to ground. the feeder should be a four wire because the white is the neutral and the ground an equipment ground. at the panelbox both the equip gnd and white terminate at the neutral bus.

Yes, you can use any safety 4-prong as long as it is a dryer cord rated at 220V.

SOURCE: Kenmore Washer/Dryer Combo Unit Cord Issue

Click here for more info on the electrical connections from a 3 to prong.
I would suggest to check with the superintendent of the building first before hooking the appliance. That way you will know if the wiring will be able to handle the amount of power require to operate the appliance.

SOURCE: I have a new 4 prong plug to replace a old 3 prong on dryer

On a three wire configuration, the ground and the negative are tied together at the center position, using the dryer ground strap. Following is a description of the difference between three and four wire. Hope it helps you.
These two pictures illustrate the power wiring on a the terminal of an electric dryer. The one on top/left is the old-style three-wire configuration. Most people have this type in their homes. New code changes, though, require that dryers now have a four-wire cord, shown on the bottom/right.
Besides the number of wires in each cord, there are two important things to notice. First, in the four-wire configuration, notice that the dryer's grounding strap is folded back on itself. The whole point of the four-wire cord is to separate the ground from the neutral. The green wire (the "new" extra wire in the four-wire cord) is attached to the dryer cabinet. In the three-wire configuration, the grounding strap is left intact and the neutral and ground are tied together.

Sure hope this helps you find a resolution to your delimma! Best wishes.

When some types of failures happen, you can charge the CASING of the washer. then you can become the connection to ground.

We have a kenmore 70 series electric dryer, and we have a three prong receptacle, but the plug is 4 prong. What type of adapter do we need?

According to the National Electrical Code, as of 2000 all newer homes are required to have a 4-prong receptacle for all 220VAC appliances. However, if your home already had a pre-existing 3 prong outlet, you shouldn't have to upgrade to a 4 prong. The following link explains:

http://www.fixya.com/support/r793520-3_prong_4_prong_power_cord_conversion

The main difference is how the neutral (WHITE) and green (GROUND) wires are termnated. In a 4 wire configuration, the neutral and ground are independent of each other. In a 3 wire configuration these two wires are terminated together. The instructions to convert a 4-prong appliance to a 3-prong are at the bottom of the page in the link I provided.

NOTE: If this is a new dryer, keep in mind, some REQUIRE a 4-prong plug even if you have a pre-existing 3 prong outlet. Read through your installation instructions that came with the appliance if in doubt. If this is the case, you will need to have a 4 wire outlet installed by a certified electrician.

If you have questions, please let me know. I hope this helps you.
