You most likely need a firmware update. My company designs and programs GPS units and software and about 3 months ago the government changed the sats. in such a way that certain Chinese gps units stopped receiving data. Email me at [email protected] and tell me what you can about the make and model of the unit itself and I can see what I can do about getting you a firmware upgrade.
Have you tried to reset everything to Factory state? Both GPS and System? If it doesn't help then restore Sanyo map software from supplied DVD. Something must be missing or corrupted.
I don't know if this will help any, but when I updated my recently purchased tomtom go 720 with the newest app (8.3) and the new voices, map, etc...the voice feature completely stopped working on my unit. Everything else was working fine except the voice. However, I had installed an 8 gig sd card into my tomtom and put all the updates on the sd card because I was running low on the internal memory. Bythe way, only the voice instructions were not working..it would still play mp3's through the internal speaker, so I knew it must be a software problem. After several days with no voice instructions, I then proceeded to re-format the sd card and start all over, as the problem appeared to be a software issue. After re-formatting the sd card, I removed it and installed the back-up file from my tomtom before I did the first update. This time, I deleted a couple of the voices in the update package, so that I would have enough room to install the updates to the internal memory. "Bam" now everything is working perfectly again. I believe for me...the tomtom was having trouble communicating with the new application that I had previously installed on the sd card. I hope this may help someone.
I have had the same problem. I bought my gps used.I soon found out sound would not come out of the gps untill I taped on the back of the gps. I solved my problem. The voice coil in the speaker becomes detached. Their are 4 screws in the back of the gps once you open up the gps the speaker is attached to the back of the inside of the gps. You have to carefully detach the speaker from the back of the gps ( I used a small flat head screw driver like one from a eye glass repair kit ) then press lightly on the center of the speaker wile the gps is trying to talk (hopefully when you do this the speaker will make noise). I stacked 2 dimes in the center of the housing of the speaker then reatached the speaker to the housing thus sandwitching the 2 dimes between the housing and the center of the speaker. For my unit this put enough pressure on the center of the speaker for the system to work. Then I reassembled the gps. It was about 4 or 5 months ago and the speaker still works fine. Some times the easy solution works just fine.
This may be a cold solder connection or mechanicaly defective component on the circuit board. There are many parts in that unit that can cause the described fault.
Call TomTom 1-978-287-9555 4 months is really early for the unit to break.. thats even before their 180 day warrenty period.. call them today and return it!
Put your mouth over the speaker & blow gently, if the diapgragm in the speaker is faulty (probably) this may lodge it back into position. Try it, nothing to loose.
