The F12 Boot Menu allows you to choose which device that you would like to boot the computer's Operating System from by pressing the F12 key during the computer's Power On Self Test, or POST process. Some notebook and netbook models have the F12 Boot Menu disabled by default.
If this sounds like your problem then try this:
If this sounds like
To enable the F12 Boot Menu:

  1. Restart the computer.
  2. Press the F2 key to enter computer's BIOS Setup during Power-On Self-Test, or POST, process while the Acer logo is being displayed.
  3. Press the Right Arrow key to select Main
  4. Select F12 Boot Menu
  5. Press the Enter key
  6. Select Enabled
  7. Press the Enter key
  8. Press the F10 key and then press the Enter key to save the changes and restart the computer.
Note: Not all Acer notebooks or netbooks have the F12 Boot Menu feature. Computers that do not have the F12 Boot Menu feature will not be able to enable the feature within the BIOS. I hope this works for you if not, then the problem is obviously not the boot menu. Go to Acer support for more help

The exact procedures vary by system, but there are a few common methods that may work if the motherboard manual is not available for guidance. The general procedure is the same for any modern computer system, but the menu arrangement and keystrokes to enter the setup program can vary greatly from one machine to the next. Power on or restart the computer and watch the initial boot screen to find the keystroke required to enter BIOS setup. This is often shown at the bottom of the screen. You can also use the arrow keys or the plus key to change the current selection from "Disabled" to "Enabled" in order to enable the PS2 port. Change the settings for the USB port by moving the menu choice to the "USB" setting. Press "Enter" to bring up a smaller menu with options to enable or disable the USB ports. Select "Enabled." Alternatively, use the arrow keys or the plus key to change the current selection from "Disabled" to "Enabled" in order to enable the USB port. Save the settings and exit by pressing "F10" or using the "Esc" key to back out of the current menu. Choose to save and exit from the main menu if needed. Follow any additional instructions on the screen to save or navigate the menus. Hope this helps.

I'm trying to help a friend install

After "Fast Boot" has been enabled, you cannot access the BIOS setup during power on . The machine will bypass "Press F2 to access Setup Utiltiy and F12 for Boot Menu" prompt.
This is a bigger issue if the hard drive crashes and access to Windows is not possible OR

Fast Boot can be enabled or disabled in the BIOS setup, or in HW Setup under Windows.
If you have Fast Boot enabled and you want to get into the BIOS setup. Hold down the F2 key, then power on. That will get you into the BIOS setup Utility.
You can disable the Fast Boot Option here. You will need to disable Fast Boot if you want to use the F12 / Boot menu.
