SOURCE: Sharp Carousel Microwave door latch stopped working door won't stay closed

Normally the problem is not the spring, but a broken spring mounting tab on the door latch head (hook) assembly or the inner door panel.

If it's the door panel, it's usually easier and cheaper to use epoxy and some kind of hardware to fashion a new spring mount.

The door latch head (hook) is easy to replace or repair if that's the issue.

We have *critical* safety & disassembly info at our site, linked here: http://tinyurl.com/yzjozk

We also have this full service manual at our site: http://www.microwavedisplay.com/R1480_R1481_R1482_sm.pdf

Normally you have to separate the door panels (as shown in the attached photo) and then you'll see the screws you need to remove.

SOURCE: Door won't latch/microwave won't turn on

The door does come apart. Open the door and where the hinges are, there are openings where the hinges enter the door, this plastic piece (goes all the way around the door) With a small flat blade screws driver VERY carefully pry it (plastic) off, once off, check the latch end for the spring, typical failure for a Sharp is the little tab that the spring hooks to on the door, the only way to repair this so it will last is to replace the door frame. they are not too expensive, about $50 or so Part# FCOVB166KIT
is the door frame assy

SOURCE: spring for the door latch is broken

As a follow up to MicrowaveSvc: first thanks for the insight. Second I found the spring mount entirely broken off from the door. I did find an anchor point molded in the door near the bottom. I tied a length of waxed whipping twine between the anchor point and the spring and adjusted the length to make the spring firm. I have a picture if you can tell me where to send it. David Smith

If you gently push up on the door latch heads (hook-like devices sticking out of the door) there should be spring tension. If they just flop right up, the spring is off inside.

Panasonic inverter door won't shut, light stays on.

Thanks for the tips - here is what I did (my wife calls me the Canadian McGuyver!) After taking off the plastic frame (using instructions in Solutions noted above) I used the metal part of a key ring and hooked one end to the spring and looped it around the thick finger/protrusion at the bottom. _197.jpg

Door latches to microwave broken

I assume you're talking about the spring that keeps tension on the door hooks (latch heads, as they're called by Sharp). When you shut the door, the "hooks" are held down by this spring to actuate the door switches. To fix this, you'll have to separate the door panels. You can download the service manual from my Web site. There's a loop built into the latch head assembly and sometimes the loop breaks. If so, you can drill a tiny hold in it and reattach the spring there. There may also be a loop on the innner door panel to hold the spring. That one can break, too. If it's broken, you'll have to find a way to secure the spring to the panel. If the panel material is thick enough, a tiny screw eye could be inserted, then epoxied overnight to secure it. I've attached a diagram to this message that should help you. If that doesn't help you, I have the service manual for the R1600-series microwaves on my Web site at: http://www.microwavedisplay.com/R1610.pdf Repost if you need more help.
