Dell 1905FP powers up but screen goes black after a few minutes

Monitor powers up long enough for computer to boot, then the screen goes black. Sometimes the screen flickers slightly before this happens. When I lose the video I will see faint colored vertical lines that dissolve into black. The power light remains lit. If I turn off the monitor and power up again I will have video for a few minutes more. Any thoughts on what the problem is? Thanks.

The monitors inverter seems to be failing. If you look up close, can you see a very faint image of the desktop?

You should think about getting a new monitor it might be cheaper than repairing.

SOURCE: Screen goes blank

Normal 0 false false false MicrosoftInternetExplorer4 /* Style Definitions */ table.MsoNormalTable {mso-style-name:"Table Normal"; mso-tstyle-rowband-size:0; mso-tstyle-colband-size:0; mso-style-noshow:yes; mso-style-parent:""; mso-padding-alt:0in 5.4pt 0in 5.4pt; mso-para-margin:0in; mso-para-margin-bottom:.0001pt; mso-pagination:widow-orphan; font-size:10.0pt; font-family:"Times New Roman"; mso-ansi-language:#0400; mso-fareast-language:#0400; mso-bidi-language:#0400;} Cause of power going off: There is a bad 1000uF, 16V cap on the power supply board.

Solution: Replace cap. Radio Shack sells a 1000uF, 35V cap for $2. This will work.

Why did the cap go bad? The cap is too close to a heat sink and over heated.

What does this cap do? This cap sends a signal to an IC which keeps the monitor 'on' after the power switch is pushed. When the cap is weak, AC ripple voltage is applied to the IC and it sends a signal to shut the monitor off.

Opening the Monitor: These monitors are difficult to open.

The two plastic pieces snap together and must be pried apart with a flat screw driver.

After removing the stand, you need to insert a flat screw driver at the bottom of the screen where two slots are located. Then work the screw driver around until the two plastic pieces are separated.

Remove the cover plate and unscrew the push button circuit board.

Unplug the monitor cords from the driver board and remove the screen.

Unscrew the mounting screws from the power supply board and remove.

You will need to pinch the plastic support in the middle of the board to remove.

Cap Replacement:

Cap is located near a copper heat sink and the value will be on the side of the cap. It will be bulged up on the top. You will see burn marks on the board surrounding the cap. Unsolder the cap.

Install the new cap and solder. Make sure you connect + of the cap to + marked on the board.

Be careful not to solder across joints.

Keep leads long so you can bend the cap as far away from the heat sink as possible.

Reassemble monitor and turn on.

This should solve the problem.

If the power light is on, but the screen never appears to light up, either the backlight or the power inverter have failed.

My dell 1905FP power button flashes green and will not turn off, the screen is black.

Hello,

This is a common indication of a failure in the power supply. There are parts called capacitors that are used in the filter section of the power supply, when they go out the power supply can't properly turn on so you get no picture and a flashing power light. Here is a picture of the power supply board with the problem filter capacitors circled in yellow and below the picture in a link to a repair guide with details dis-assemble and repair instruction along with parts list for the Dell 1905FP and 1907FP models.
