It does need a Router and Modem. Every computer does. Even if you bought the new Verizon mini pc, it needs the towers signal since that is the router. Wireless just means that you don't have to drag a wire from the computer to the router. You need a wireless router that will attach to the modem for this to work. Otherwise the signal from the computer just goes into the air into nowhere. If you go to stores that have "hot spots" or "wifi" and use your computer, that just means that they have a router that you're signal is hooking up to.

Wireless networks - 29
Installation speed and simplicity Installing a wireless LAN system can be fast and easy and eliminates the need to pull cables through walls and ceilings. Components of a wireless LAN To set up your Wireless network at home you need to have the following:

Access point (router)
Access points (routers) are two-way transceivers that broadcast data into the surrounding environment. Access points act as a mediator between wired and wireless network. Most routers have a built-in DSL modem that will allow you access to a high speed DSL internet connection. The ISP (Internet Service Provider) you have chosen normally supplies a modem/router with the subscription to their services. Read carefully the documentation supplied
with your Access point/router for detailed setup instructions

Is your Telstra/Bigpond ADSL modem has a built-in wireless router?
If the ADSL modem has a built-in wireless router and your laptop does not have a wireless card, then you have two options to connect your laptop to the ADSL wireless router/Internet -
1. Purchase a PCMCIA wireless adapter and insert it into the PCMCIA slot in your laptop. One of my favourites is made by Netgear.
or
2. Purchase a USB wireless adapter, the only disadvantage with this solution is, it uses a USB port and if your laptop has only one USB port. This is a problem if you need to connect other USB devices. Then you also need to purchase a 4 port USB hub to give you additional USB ports.

Do my computer have wireless internet

The Acer Aspire 5315-2153 notebook was designed with a built-in 802.11b/g Wireless LAN card. The wireless card is typically enabled using a small toggle switch located at the front, left of the PC.

The switch moves to the left and has what appears to be a "satellite dish" icon stenciled just to the right of it.

Toggle once to turn the card on and again to turn it off.

How to connect to the Internet with the built-in

Do you mean a wireless network card? I am assuming you meant the wireless card. In windows donw in the bottom right there is a connection Icon. Right click on that Icon and select open network and sharing center. Then select your wireless network.
If you do not have a wireless network, yes you do need a wireless router.
If you do have a wireless network already set up, you will need to configure the settings so you can connect to it. Whatever the password is a so on.

Has An Acer Travelmate 243LC laptop got a build-in Wireless?

The link below will take you to a page on the Acer Web site that shows the specs for this laptop. According to the specs, this laptop does not come with onboard wireless (if this feature were part of the system, it would be listed in the specs). Also, you can check Device Manager to see if you have a Wireless Adapter listed under Network Adapters. If you don't see any type of Wireless adapter listed then you'll definitely know that your laptop doesn't have it built in.

To access Device Manager:
Right-click My Computer
Click Properties
Click Manage
In the left navigation pane, click Device Manager.
In the larger window, scroll down the list to Network Adapters.
Expand the Network Adapters tree to see the installed adapters.

http://www.acersupport.com/notebook/html/tm243lc_specs.html

However, the specs do show that this laptop has 2 PC Card slots. These slots give you at least a couple of options for connecting to the Internet. You can buy an Air Card that is installed in one of the PC Card slots when you want to use it to access the Internet. My company used to provide Air Cards for laptop users through AT&T. The advantage is that you have an uninterrupted connection to the Internet no matter your location.

You can also buy a WiFi card that fits into a PC Card slot. This card will be your Wireless NIC (adapter) providing you with the means to set up connections to wireless networks. Linksys is a pretty good brand and fairly easy to install and support. After installation and configuration, you can pop the card in your PC Card slot anytime you want to connect to a Wireless network then remove it when it's no longer needed.

I hope this helps you connect wirelessly using your laptop. Please rate this solution and thanks for using Fixya.

Can't connect to internet with built in wireless

Do you have Windows XP, and did you install Service Pack 3? If so, you may need to go to the wireless card's manufacturer's site and download an updated driver (or if not available, reinstall the original driver). SP3 puts in a file that is incompatible with many wireless cards.

My wireless network card needs a new driver?

I have actually experienced this before and surprisingly, it turned out to be a hardware fault with my built-in wireless device. I had to resort eventually to one of those USB plug-in wifi dongles. They cost less than ten bucks, and if you don't need the range, come in "nano" sizes that protrude less than half an inch when installed. Do disable the internal wifi device, either in device manager or better still, in the bios if using this solution.
