Generally, they are operated by a remote control (similar to a television), although some units do have a wired wall control option as well. The indoor and outdoor unit has sensors that measure temperature (to control the operation of the mini-split) and (once the remote is set) the sensors control the system until it reaches the set point set on the remote.

Did you figure out why the ac wasn't responding to the remote? I am having the same problem. I just cleaned out the filters but it's still not responding to the remote. I have already tried reset button in the remote, which didn't help. I am pretty sure that the remote is not out of battery.

Transmission problem. Try with another same type remote. If still problem, receiving signal in PCB weak.Replace it.

this units ahve a reset boton on the roght side of the unit open the lid like if you was gonna change filters a small boton should be on the right side of the unit push it and if your unit turns on then you need to get a new remote if it doesn't then is your PC board

How did you check the remote? Did you check the remote via viewing it on a LCD screen? If the remote is working than you need a new receiver PCB for your air con and would contact Sanyo to see if it is under warranty or for them to get someone out to veiw.
