My son dropped his ds Lite and the right hand hige came off. Now when you turn on the ds the power on light comes on the touch screen flickers and then it dies . there si no other sign of life in it except when you plug in the charger it appears to be charging.
any idea what the problem might be and how costly it would be to repair ?
It's the ribbon cable for the top screen it's came loose. They are very sensitive. I wouldn't suggest playing it with a broken hinge, because the cable will get damaged in a few days and you will have to pay for a new screen(as the cable is part of the screen.) There are people that can fix it for relatively cheaply.

Re: dropped ds Broken hinge not working
Problem could be a crack board and if the ds lite is less than a year old u can call nintendo and setup to get fix i think they will only charge 50 bucks . i had mine touch screen replaced by nintendo n they only charge me 50 bucks.

it's likely that the top screen ribbon cable has either become damaged or loose, the entire top screen will probably need replacing (along with the casing if the hinge is broken).. if you are not confident with technical or fiddley things I wouldnt recommend attempting it yourself.
if you would have sent it to me first I would have replaced the case for you and you wouldn't have had these problems, but I can still help you out. I have a white nintendo DS lite in stock that I had to replace the bottom lcd display in. I will ship to you for $90 and if you are feeling adventurous send me your parts and I will take off $10 since I have no clue what is broken and what is not, but to me it sounds like the bottom lcd, touch screen , and circuit board are trash. The system powers on, then performs a system check. The DS is finding some sort of error More than likely the top screen was damaged. I've been told that the screen that flickers is usually the good screen. The bad one doesn't flicker because it's damaged. You can replace the top screen yorself (if you're fairly handy), or you can pay a professional to do it. You can get new screens from Dealextreme.com for around 10US dollars, with free shipping. You can also find videos about how to change out the top screen on youtube. Hope this helps
Components may have come loose on the board, or damaged solder joints. Water damage can sometimes only appear after water has had time to seep, unless knock helped throw some residual water around inside, onto things it shouldn't touch.
