I have an ipod model a1199. i was wondering if you can use a newer ipod touch charger for it? and if not what kind of charger does it use?

Charge an iPod Nano Without a Charger
If you've misplaced or broken the charger that came with your iPod Nano, you might think you need to purchase a new one in order to continue using your Mp3 player.
However, there is a way that you can continue enjoying your iPod without having to purchase a new charger.
As long as you have a USB cord and a computer, you can charge your iPod without having the charger.

Locate the USB cord that came with your iPod Nano package.
It is the same cord that you use in order to sync or transfer music.
Plug the small end into your iPod Nano.

Plug the other, larger end into your computer's USB port.
Choose "Do Nothing" when your computer presents the dialogue box to let you choose what to do with the hardware or USB connection.
Leave your Nano plugged into your computer for at least 4 hours to charge.
Unplug your iPod Nano when charging is complete.
Charge an iPod Without the Charger
Many iPod owners purchase a charging unit that plugs into a standard wall outlet to recharge the iPod's battery.
However, the iPod wall charger is not included with new purchases, so consumers must either purchase a separate charger or find a way to charge their iPod using other means.
Here's a simple method to charge your iPod using your computer.

Plug the iPod USB cable into the bottom of your iPod.
Plug the other end of the iPod USB cable into a free USB port on your Mac or PC computer.

Open the iTunes program by clicking on the icon in the Dock on a Mac or using the Start menu on a PC.
Click on the name of your iPod under the "Devices" heading in the main iTunes window.
Click on the "Sync" button to synchronize your iPod with your computer data.
While the iPod is syncing, the power from the USB port on your computer will charge your iPod's battery.

Unplug your iPod from the computer once the battery is fully charged.

This one should be ok.

My computer isnt recognising my white ipod cable to download from computer to ipod when i insert the white cable the computer doesnt register that its there and nothing happens on my ipod screen

First, Make sure the cord is plugged in all the way on the ipod and computer.  Also, you gots ta have itunes open so it will sync with the ipod.  Unplug the cord and try again.  Try the cord out on your friends or relatives ipod to see if you got a faulty cord.  If you got a bad cord, then throw it out and get you a new one. If the above don't works for ya then, unplug the cable.  Backup your itunes music. uninstall itunes.  Re-install the same version of itunes.  Open itunes and plug your ipod in making sure the connections are firm.  If that don't do it for ya, then your fu.k.d and need to take the thing back to the store for even exchange if your within your 30 day window or back to the Apple store if your within your 1 year window.  Note that Apple will reject you if you exposed this thing to liquids or dropped the thing.

Just got an ipodtouch. when i turn it on the only screen is itunes. How do I get the menu

Download itunes onto your computer.  Now install it on your computer and close out of itunes.  Your ipod touch ships with the battery half charged so it won't blow up during shipping.  So plug the thing into your computers USB port to charge for 6-8 hours. Make sure your computer is plugged into AC power outlet and that your computer is powered down. Preferable you get an AC plug outlet charger for this thing so it will charge faster and not use up your USB port on your computer.  After full charge is reached you can unplug the thing from power outlet.  Now turn your computer on and open up itunes.  Now plug the USB cord into your computer and the other end of the cord into your ipod.  A window will pop up prompting you to create your nameo and account info.  Just follow the directions to set up new user.  The icon you see when you first turn on the ipod is telling you you gots ta plug this thing into your computer and sync the ipod with itunes.
