I just had the same problem with my MP80.
After removing and replacing the cartridges several times the problem stayed.
I then also removed the printerhead (that is placed under the cartridges) cleaned it at the backside and bottum, replaced everything and the problem is gone!!!

Good luck!

"5100 is a carriage error, check the timing strip for contamination (plastic strip about 1/4" in width)  The unit is not homing, check for obstructions. The info from canon is located by clicking here

It's a common problem caused by some wires that gets tangled inside the right side housing of the printer.

make sure to check if the printer head moves to the center or cartridge-loading position...
if this doesn't happen, turn off your printer and proceed to the next steps...
unscrew all the screws to remove the housing or cover on the rightside of the printer (make sure the printer is facing you)... uncoil or untangle the wires... after you did that make sure to set or rest the wires to where it can't be tangled or spooled again. you can use tie straps to secure the wires away.
screw the housing side back on the printer. turn your printer on...lift the front cover... if the cartridge dock moves to the center... YOUR PRINTER IS FIXED!!!

What is error code 5110 mean?

According to the manual, error 5110 means "Carriage lift mechanism error".
It's usually related to cartridges, particularly if they not inserted correctly, but can also be caused by other mechanical failures.

Message on printer screen is simply Error Code 5110

I found this on another site. It is for error code 5100 but since nobody seems to find the exact answer for 5110, maybe you should give it a try. If this helps, email a "thank you note" to the person who wrote this, his email address is at the end of this message.

As a technician, I have worked on tons of printers. This particular error had stumped me for a while, but I finally found the cause. As others had pointed out before, it can have a lot to do with some obstruction in the print path, the gears, or ink on the clear plastic encoder strip. You're on the right track - I found the the purge cap (the white sliding mechanism that the print head parks to when it's not in use) was not lubricated well enough from factory. If you lubricate the sliders with some white grease (don't get it on the small wipers or the black caps) the mechanism can now slide more freely, and the unit can park the head properly without giving you the dreaded head homing error 5100. Keep in mind that this repair will probably require you to remove the right panel off of the printer to gain access to the purge mechanism. There are two screws behind the printer, and two in front for each corrosponding side panel (the front screws are behind the grey front panel of the printer - open the top cover to see the clips which hold the front cover on) Hope this helps some of you out.
