CANNOT OPEN AND NAME A DOCUMENT ONCE I SCAN INTO PAPERPORT

Scan to PDF requires third-party software and linking that software to the HP Solution Center. The HP imaging software only saves to BMP, DCX, FPX, GIF, JPG, PCD, PCX, and TIF. You need a program like PaperPort or save the document as an image and then convert it to a PDF (using Microsoft Office, another Office Suite, or a dedicated image to PDF conversion program.)

I wish that I had better news for you. PaperPort can be found for $50 from some vendors after rebate.

Well, yes and no. I use a product called Paperport. I fought with Command Central too long. I originally got Paperport with a scanner. It has a Scan tab that you set a profile to scan documents in any format and dot size (as in B&W, Greyscale, Color and 200x200, 600x600 etc.). The documents are put into a file and you can merge or unmerge the resulting files (ie pdf works for me). The software lists for $100, but it shows up for half price at a lot of places. Ebay and Tiger Direct also gets in on the action. Here's the link to Nuance and it's Paperport 12.

I could never get my Control Center software to behave, so I just sucked it up and used Paperport.
I got my first copy several years ago with a scanner and have upgraded through each edition.
With the Brother software, I can put the documents into the feeder, run Control Center on my computer, and it let me edit the application that opens when I click Scan to Email, but the attachment always messed up and gave an error.

With Paperport, I click on Scan Settings and I am presented with options to pick a document type (color, b&w and resolution) and device options including auto straighten, pdf, OCR, etc. As it's scanned, I can then merge or unmerge the pdf pages and name them by hand.

It is a $100 program, but they usually offer it for half price most anywhere from time-to-time.

There are other Scan to email software programs, that may be free, that will do the same thing.

You need to adjust the resolution in the software. Are you using the Dell software and PaperPort or another application?

This will be easiest to do when you launch the scan from the computer. If you have the TWAIN driver loaded, load the document to scan in the ADF and open Paperport. Click FileScan and the available scanners list should open. Choose your scanner (otherwise click the Select button on the left side of the window). Then click OK. Click on the Scanner Display dialog box on the left of the window. Click on Preview. Then adjust the resolution by clicking on the Image Quality tab.

If the document contains is only a series of picture or you have the WIA driver loaded, then use Paint or PhotoGallery (Vista includes the program, but it is available for XP or Windows 7). Then choose File > Import from Camera or Scanner > From Scanner. Open the Advanced Properties dialog box by clicking on Adjust the Quality of the Scanned picture.

(The default resolution is used when you launch a scan from the unit itself. It is possible to adjust it once the software loads but you must use the scan to file option, instead of scan to e-mail. Then attach the resultant file to your e-mail.)

This type of information (different ways to scan) come through the software. I'm pretty sure you will not be able to do this by the (add printer) method. I would uninstall the Paperport driver from your computer, then reinstall, and try to use the "advanced" method to see if it will allow you to add those two. I have found if scanning ability shows up in one Microsoft Office product, it will show up in another. Plus, my photo processing program will show the same ability.

First of the Brother has a Software program itself that you will need to load to be able to do any scanning.
When you use this software to scan a document you can then change the scan to be the type of file you need it to be like the microsoft word (.doc) file. Please understand the even though you scan a document does not mean when you get into the '.doc' word 2005 format you can go word or letter by letter. It still acts like a picture not a document you can manipulate.

Open preview and go to file and then scroll down to "import from scanner" MFC should show up as a choice and then when the window appears, go ahead and pick your preferences and scan

When scanning documents on my MFC 7420, this is what I do. Place document on th scanner bed and don't press any buttons, leave it whatever mode it is in. Go to the computer and click on start> program files> scansoft paperport> open paperport se. When paperport is open click on the scan icon in the upper left corner. A dialog box on the left hand side will ask what you want to scan a picture or document. Select accordingly and press the scan icon.
A new window will pop up and ask what you want to scan and the size. You can either select pre scan or scan. The computer then will send a scan request to the scanner. When it is done scanning close the second window that popped up and the document that you just scanned will be there with a red box around it. Click on the document and it will open, then you can edit and save as needed.
