The screen is way too bright for sustained use on my Windows 7 Gateway Acer ZX4971G. I have searched under the Start menu for terms like 'brightness' and come up with nothing but color adjustment. As always, I already run f.lux from http://justgetflux.com/ which helps out, but not enough, even on it's strongest settings. I have inspected the exterior for a switch or wheel to adjust brightness, to no avail. Update: While waiting for an answer, I am working around this with a combination of http://download.cnet.com/Monitor-Brightness-Reducer/3000-2072_4-10690260.html and f.lux - lifesavers!

If 2 monitors are showing the same picture, your graphics card is at fault.
First, Click on my computer - device manager - check there are no alarms shown by the devices in your pc especially the graphics card.
If none, RMB click on your graphics card, select properties and choose the "Roll back Driver" option.
Second, look on the Gateway website, follow links for support/downloads check that you have the latest driver for your graphics card. Also note the make, model and type of your graphics card. You'll need these if it has to be replaced.
If both have been completed, then your graphics card probably needs replacing. I'd try ebay first for a good second hand. You could take this opportunity to upgrade, just make sure you buy on with the correct interface.
