Here is an actual e-mail from a Canon tech regarding this problem:

Thank you for your recent enquiry regarding your Canon product

Please accept my apologies for the delay in contacting you regarding the
problems you have been experiencing with your CanoScan D646U.

I shall firstly answer your query regarding the TWAIN drivers. There are four
main TWAIN files that are pre-installed with Windows, TWAIN.DLL, TWAIN_32.DLL,
TWUNK_16.EXE and TWUNK_32.EXE. These are included with the scanner drivers to
ensure that a compatible version of the files are installed, otherwise the
scanner will not work. During installation these files are checked for and, if
a later version is already installed, the versions from the disk will not be
installed. I can assure you that the scanner driver will work OK with version
1.7 of the TWAIN drivers.

For the scanner to communicate correctly the Still Image Services needs to be
running in the background. To check this please open the Control Panel and look
under Services in Admin Tools. Please check to ensure that the Still Image
Service is running correctly.

If all this is OK, I would recommend removing the driver in the following way.
With the scanner still connected go to Device Manager. Under Imaging Devices
right click on the CanoScan D660U and select uninstall. After this please
disconnect your scanners USB lead and remove the rest of the driver using the
DELDRV utility. Before reinstalling the driver you must restart your PC and
then reconnect the scanner.

If there are still problems please check that the driver has installed
correctly. The following files should be shown in the driver section when you
look at the scanner properties in Device Manager.

C:\WINNT\SYSTEM32\D064UCPL.DLL
C:\WINNT\SYSTEM32\D064UFW.DLL
C:\WINNT\SYSTEM32\D064UFW.INI
C:\WINNT\SYSTEM32\D064UFW.PLG
C:\WINNT\SYSTEM32\D064UUD.DLL
C:\WINNT\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS\USBSCAN.SYS
C:\WINNT\SYSTEM32\SPOOL\DRIVERS\COLOR\CNS60N.ICC
C:\WINNT\SYSTEM32\SPOOL\DRIVERS\COLOR\CNZ005.ICC
C:\WINNT\SYSTEM32\UCS32P.DLL
C:\WINNT\TWAIN_32\D64U\CANOIT32.EXE
C:\WINNT\TWAIN_32\D64U\CISDS.DS
C:\WINNT\TWAIN_32\D64U\CSUI.CNT
C:\WINNT\TWAIN_32\D64U\CSUI.DLL
C:\WINNT\TWAIN_32\D64U\CSUI.HLP
C:\WINNT\TWAIN_32\D64U\D064UA.DLL
C:\WINNT\TWAIN_32\D64U\D064UUI.DLL
C:\WINNT\TWAIN_32\D64U\IMGENH.DLL
C:\WINNT\TWAIN_32\D64U\IOP.DLL
C:\WINNT\TWAIN_32\D64U\ITLIB32.DLL
C:\WINNT\TWAIN_32\D64U\LTKRNION.DLL
C:\WINNT\TWAIN_32\D64U\README.TXT
C:\WINNT\TWAIN_32\D64U\SCANINTF.DLL
C:\WINNT\TWAIN_32\D64U\SYSERROR.EXE
C:\WINNT\TWAIN_32\D64U\TPM.DLL

All of the files mentioned above that are listed as being in the TWAIN_32\D64U
folder are the exact files that should appear in that folder if you look in
Windows Explorer.

A further cause of the TWAIN error occurring is if there is a conflict with
another TWAIN compliant device, such as a Digital Camera or scanning device
(including Multifunctional devices. If you have such a device installed try
removing its software before reinstalling the scanner driver.

We hope this information is of use to you. However, should you require any
further technical assistance, please do not hesitate to contact us quoting your

I have HP Officejet J3680 All in one I wanted to scan a document but it is saying there is not option..

canning functionality from the LJ3380 and CLJ2840 series All-in-One devices may not function until the correct Twain Data Source is selected by the user. This can be done by attempting to scan from the foundation scan executable "hppscan2.exe ".
  • For the LJ3380 series this is located in C:\Program Files\Hewlett-Packard\LJ3015_LJ3020_LJ3030_LJ3380->hppscan2.exe
  • For the CLJ2840 this is found in C:\Program Files\HP\Digital Imaging\bin->hppscan2.exe
When the "hppscan2.exe " is launched from this location where it resides, a dialog box will open with a "Select Source " box listing the installed Twain scanning devices available. If this box is not seen, then there is only one Twain device installed. In some instances user input is needed to chose the "correct" Twain data source for scanning to be successful from the LJ3380 and CLJ2840 series devices. If the incorrect Twain data source is selected- an error "Cannot initialize device " will be seen.

When I open HP Scan Pro and attempt to scan a document it tells me the scanner is not found. It is plugged in by USB correctly.

The computer is looking for a "Twain" device. Although the printer is correctly installed, to scan a document or picture, you need a program to associate with the scanner and identify the "Twain" device. To do this, open up any photo software or even MS Paint. Under the File tab there should be an option to Import or Import from a device i.e. camera, scanner. This is the option you want. Select your HP Scan Pro as the Twain device and you can scan from your computer. The other way would be to open HP Imaging software package that came with the machine and configure your scanner from within the program. Either way works its just a matter of preference. Best of luck and reply back with any questions.

Scanning a word document Deskjet F4180

Scanning a document is the same as scanning a picture, it must be done from within the document app. In this case I'm assuming you are using Microsoft Word.

Scan a picture and insert it in a document@import url(/Office.css); To do this procedure, your device (a scanner or a digital camera) must be connected to your computer and be TWAIN-compatible. You should also make sure that you have installed the device software that supports TWAIN.
Some devices come with more than one software program. If you are not sure what software is TWAIN-compatible, check the device documentation or contact the manufacturer of the device.
  1. Set up the picture in the scanning device.

  2. On the Insert menu in Microsoft Word, point to Picture, and then click From Scanner or Camera.

  3. If you have more than one device connected to your computer, select the one you want to use under Device.

  4. Do one of the following: If you want to use a lower resolution or you intend for your document to be viewed on the screen, click Web Quality.
  5. If you want to use a higher resolution or you intend for your document to be printed, click Print Quality.

  6. Do one of the following: If you're using a scanner and you want to use predefined settings to scan your picture, click Insert.
If you're using a scanner and you want to change image settings, or if you're using a camera, click Custom Insert. Then follow the instructions that come with the device you're using.
  7. When the image appears in the document, make any changes you want.

  8. You can use the tools on the Picture toolbar to make changes such as cropping the picture, and adjusting its brightness, contrast, and color.
Note The Insert button might be unavailable when using some scanners because the scanner software doesn't support an automatic scanning. Use the Custom Insert button instead.

Error message

What is your operating system?

If XP, check your device manager to see if the scanner is being recognized by XP.

What is your scanning software?
Try to use another scan program ( a free demo version should work fine.)

Are you using TWAIN or an ISIS driver? If it is a TWAIN driver, then any Photo editing program should be able to connect ( usuallly!?).

Cannot get my USB memory stick to install on XP

I have a sandisk cruzer, titanium 512mb. Model: SDCZ3 512 I have used this to store massive amounts of data that I frequently need to access. Recently, when I plugged the device into my computer's USB, I received the following message: "USB Device Not Recognized" After double clicking on this message, I got the USB Root Hub. The last item on the tree stated: "Unknown Device." I double-clicked on the unknown device, and in the Device Status box, received the following message: "No Drivers installed for this device. If you are having problems with this device, click Troubleshoot to start the troubleshooter." I attempted to troubleshoot, but the device remains unrecognized. How can I access the data I have stored on this device? I have even tried to install the drivers automatically, but it would not istall succesfully.

Initialization failed - Unable to acquire TWAIN-compliant device

Hello,

I have seen your message stating that "Initialization failed - Unable to acquire TWAIN-compliant device" error is received when trying to connect USB-Parallel type to your Laptop.

Well,  Printer  Panasonic UF4100, recommends to use only " Printer/Scanner Interface as Bi-directional Parallel (IEEE1284) " means you need to use Parallel cable to connect Printer to the Computer/Notebook.  You may receive some communication error messages if you are using a  "PORT REPLICATOR CABLE"( USB TO PARALLEL connector).  The error message that you have received is related to the communication error. Futher, if you use same USB- Parallel cable for long time the Printer Hardware functionality might go bad, since Printer memory gets confused and will not read or detect the Cable , since it is not a cable to use  mentioned by Panasonic Manufacturer.

Let me tell you, general functionality of Printer like Printing would work even if you use USB-Parallel cable. But it is not a case with Scanner and Fax functionality.

Hence, I recommend you to use only Parallel cable to connect your Printer to the Laptops.

I hope that this will resolve the issue for you.

You can email me at [email protected] if you need further assistance.

Bye.
