Well it can be many reasons why it's slow, but I have a few things you could do that may help.
First make sure you have security for your system. Microsoft Security Essentials is free. It can guard your system from viruses, spyware, and other malicious software. Below is some of my notes from college on speeding up your computer. I hope this helps.

================================================
Indexing service is a little program that uses a large amount of RAM. The program indexes and list files that are on your computer so when you do a search for things on your computer it can find it faster by scanning the index list. You don't need this service so to disable it.

Go to start
settings
control panel
add/remove programs
add/remove windows components
uncheck the index services
click next

Optimize display settings

visual items can waste system resources
to optimize:

start
settings
control settings
control panel
system
advanced tab
in the performance tab click settings
leave only the following ticked

show shadows under menus
show shadows under mouse pointer
show translucent selection rectangle
used drop shadows for icons labels on the desktop
use visual styles on windows and buttons

Speedup folder browser

when you open mycomputer the slight delay is because win xp searches for network files and printers every time you open windows explorer

mycomputer
tools folder options
view tab
uncheck the automatically search for network folders and printers check box
click apply
click ok
reboot comp

Remove the Desktop Picture

Your desktop background consumes a fair amount of memory and can slow the loading time of your system. Removing it will improve performance.

Right click on Desktop and select Properties
Select the Desktop tab
In the Background window select None
Click Ok

Remove Fonts for Speed

Fonts, especially TrueType fonts, use quite a bit of system resources. For optimal performance, trim your fonts down to just those that you need to use on a daily basis and fonts that applications may require.

Open Control Panel
Open Fonts folder
Move fonts you don't need to a temporary directory (e.g. C:FONTBKUP?) just in case you need or want to bring a few of them back. The more fonts you uninstall, the more system resources you will gain.

Free up disk space
The Disk Cleanup tool helps you free up space on your hard disk to improve the performance of your computer. The tool identifies files that you can safely delete, and then enables you to choose whether you want to delete some or all of the identified files.

Use Disk Cleanup to:

Remove temporary Internet files.

Remove downloaded program files (such as Microsoft ActiveX controls and Java applets).

Empty the Recycle Bin.

Remove Windows temporary files such as error reports.

Remove optional Windows components that you don't use.

Remove installed programs that you no longer use.

Remove unused restore points and shadow copies from System Restore.

Tip: Typically, temporary Internet files take the most amount of space because the browser caches each page you visit for faster access later.

Speed up access to data
Disk fragmentation slows the overall performance of your system. When files are fragmented, the computer must search the hard disk when the file is opened to piece it back together. The response time can be significantly longer.

Disk Defragmenter is a Windows utility that consolidates fragmented files and folders on your computer's hard disk so that each occupies a single space on the disk. With your files stored neatly end-to-end, without fragmentation, reading and writing to the disk speeds up.

When to run Disk Defragmenter
In addition to running Disk Defragmenter at regular intervals-monthly is optimal-there are other times you should run it too, such as when:

You add a large number of files.

Your free disk space totals 15 percent or less.

You install new programs or a new version of Windows.

The popping and slow to pick up speed is caused by a vacuum leak. Check all the vacuum lines are connected and not broken anywhere.

Try downloading ad-aware. Run it and see if that speeds it up. It is a spyware killer (pop-ups), also clean your hard drive up with a disk clean up option and a degragmentation. If it is still running slow, try a ram up grade.

What is happening with AOL? I have been having lots of pop ups, slow computer and AOL telling me they are having problems? My computer very slow?

Is you computer slow when using software offline? If so, it is either AOL or your internet. Don't judge the speed strictly by going to AOL. Go to Speakeasy Speed Test and test your internet speed. If that shows your internet is running at the speed you are paying for, it si AOL having trouble. You don't say which browser you are using, but most browsers have an option to block pop-ups. Make sure it is on.
Run a virus scan on your PC to see if it is infected. Also defrag your hard drive to speed it up some.

The popup is directional. They must be inserted the right direction to get the most extension above the surface of the drain hole.

Offline very slow, though I defrag weekly, A pop

Sounds like a virus. Try installing Microsoft Security Essentials and Malware Bytes. Run those a few times and see if that fixes the problem. If it is still slow, reinstall windows.

Pops up lime wire, curser won't work, extremely slow

Try downloading Avast Free version. I have had great success removing things infected from LimeWire with this software. When you download and get it set up, it will ask if you want to set up a boot scan. Say yes. Let the system re-boot and run. if something pops up it will pop up a window with a siren on it. move everything to the chest. Do not delete anything as it may be a system file that you delete. Lime wire is a haven for viruses. I would suggest getting rid of it.
