If you use the charger that came with your kindle fire, you can rest knowing that it will not overcharge by leaving it plugged in too long. Usually 4 to 6 hours should fully charge it though.
The Kindle Fire HD, if completely discharged, may take several hours to begin to accept a charge again. Simply leave it plugged in long enough and the on-board system will sort it out.
The battery in it is going bad, or not charging due to oxidized contacts or faulty wiring. When it goes into HD mode, it requires a full voltage, and at least one cell may not be holding charge. You'll have to replace the battery, most likely, unless the charger or charger wire is bad.
