Question about Dell Inspiron 6400 Notebook

1 Answer

Screen Failure I just dropped a fairly light folder onto my 6400, bending the screen all the way back and causing the screen to turn off. After checking for initial visible damage(none) I restarted it, but to no avail. A few of the lights flash on and off but the screen remains off. It's also not making any noise, but they could be due to me used to noisy sever rigs. The battery is fine as it was working before the folder fell on it and I have tried swapping it out. I have a feeling the folder caused the 'hibernate' switch to get damaged so the laptop is stuck in hibernation mode. I can't see a switch anywhere for this though, I'm not even sure it has it since I've never used it before.

Tried a monitor and the computer started up fine, and I had full control within my OS too. I'm going to see what happens now with the local computer stores, as I doubt i have the correct tools for fixing myself. At least now I can stop them from trying to resell me an entire new laptop since I know it works except for the screen.

Couldn't get it working myself, well I might have been able to but didn't want to end up breaking it more than it currently is. Took it to the store and got it replaced everything is working now, and didn't cost that much in the end. They did quote me a repair price but since they wanted to do testing and all that it was going to cost more... Thanks for the help.

Ok, first, don't just run off the battery. Plug it in to the ac adapter. Then hook up an external monitor and see if there's anything there. Try booting cold and pressing F2 to access bios. If there's an image on the external, you probly blew the inverter (easy fix, 35.00 part)
Let me know how that works out.
Good luck

boy, I'm sure glad I could help out there. Thanks for that "almost" rating . I live for being "almost" good enough.

Good luck with the inverter. You're gonna need it.

How can I install drivers for dell inspiron 6400?

Hi.

Click on the link at the bottom of the page to open Dell download page. Using the form on the Dell page, choose the OS (XP or Vista), the download links will be listed on the lower part of the Dell page.

Download one by one the drivers listed on the last part of the Dell page (audio, video etc.) by clicking the link for each driver.

Save the drivers into a folder, renaming them as audio, video etc. When you have finished downloading all drivers install them one by one onto the Inspiron 6400 by executing the files that you just finished downloading.

You may need to restart the computer after installing each driver.Ensure that the driver installation is complete before restarting.

Ensure that you are using an account with administrator privileges while installing the drivers. If using Vista you may need to click the right button of the mousepad on the installer file, and choose 'Run as Administrator' from the drop down menu.

Here the download page: Drivers & Downloads

Note: drivers for Windows 7 and Windows 64 OS are not available.

Regards.

I dropped and dragged some sizable folders from a desktop onto the Maxtor external drive. When I plug the drive into a different computer, I only see the files that I put on the drive a year ago on the...

Several things could be happening.
1. the hard drive direct drive motor is giving out.
2. the hard drive is full.
3. the hard drive needs to be optimized ( that is defragmented) using the Windows defragment utility. If the drive is large it will take some time to complete.

Connecting the Camera to the PC

Preparation:

NOTES
• When the USB cable is connected, turning on or off the camera causes malfunctions of the PC.

• Connect the camera directly to the PC, not through the hub.

• Do not use an extension USB cable.

• Saving the wrong kinds of files in a recording medium or deleting files or folders from a recording medium can cause problems with the operation of the camera. When it is necessary to delete a file from a recording medium, delete it through the camera. Also, do not move or rename folders and files in the medium on PC.

• Never disconnect the USB cable while the access/charge lamp on the camera lights or blinks.

1 Create a folder to back up files into.

3 On the camera, move the set lever to

then press down.

4 Double-click [EVERIO_HDD] or [EVERIO_SD].

5 Select the folder that you want to back up, and drag & drop it into the folder you created in step 1.
SD_VIDEO:
Folder that contains video files. If you want to back up fi les individually, open this folder, and drag & drop folders such as [PRG001] one by one.
DCIM:
Folder that contains still image fi les. If you want to back up fi les individually, open this folder, and drag & drop files such as [PIC_0001.JPG] one by one.

When you have finished operation

Always follow the procedures below when disconnecting the camera, or turning off the camera/computer power.
Failing to do so may cause damage to the camera and computer.

1) Confirm that the access/charge lamp on the camera does not light or blink. (If the access/charge lamp lights or blinks, wait until it is turned off before proceeding.)

2) Double-click the [Safely Remove Hardware] or [Unplug or Eject Hardware] icon in the status bar.

3) Select [USB Mass Storage Device] or
[USB Disk], and then click [Stop].

4) Click [OK].

5) Disconnect the USB cable.

6) Turn off the camera and PC.
