Compaq Evo 410c down after AC/AC plug-in

My Compaq Evo 410c blew something when it was plugged into an AC/AC transformer and didn't turn on thereafter. There was something falling about inside. I managed to open the laptop and remove the item which I originally thought to be the (or a) fuse; however, because it's a tiny coil covered/enclosed completely in glass (ca. 4-5mm X 1.5-2mm in diameter) with no contact leads what so ever, so it can't be the (or a) fuse. I have sinced googled laptop fuses and found they look entirely different. I have also searched all the laptop's circuit boards for the holder of the glass capsule and can't find where it goes. Anyone know anything -anything at all? -Thanks.

  • Anonymous Jun 09, 2009

Great idea Raksoft, but A.: there is no local store, B. there is no serial number on the capsule and as I mentioned, I cannot locate from where on the circut board the glass capsule/coil came from and C.: there are no burn marks or residue which would indicate a blown fuse. Thanks anyway. It just sux because the laptop is in otherwise in prety good condition. I'd hate to throw it out.

Let me read all 3 posts, why not just have one and comment to one?
symptoms for all, do nor read posts from folks telling you to find fuse clips seen in 1980s, PC, forget that. this is all SMD parts.
wiki that....

  • previous owner used a AC/power pack and blew up this LT..
  • its 19vdc not 24vac, or you WILL BLOW IT UP.
  • fixing that if true is non trivial to say the least.
  • it will not power on with battery removed, and with correct 19vdc pack attached,
  • or it does turn on sometimes but locks up in XP screens.
  • This is a 13 year old LT. so fixing one this old is dicey.
  • (reason is XP is dead OS and parts hard to find)
  • why look for fuses. if a fuse works on 1 boot why would it fail 2nd boot? answer its not a fuse its dream of a fuse. (hope)
  • Does BIOS screens work,
  • Does using a DT screen on the rear 15p, VGA port work can the external screen be made to work.
  • Does booting to any bootable CD work, HP windows install or live LINUX cd, or window live PE CD work. if yes the LT is ok
  • just has bad OS or BAD HDD.
  • Power dead totally and 19vdc on the MOBO input pins
  • is a dead mobo, no BIOS,on both screens, 19vdc in is a dead mobo. The fuse if present are SMD fuses F1,F1, if mobo marked, L1, L2, those are inductors not fuse... nice try though.

SOURCE: i had a GPU issue

While opening the laptop, dust/moisture may have accumulated on the contact points to the battery, hence LED is lighting up since power is reaching till there but does not continue to the battery. Another soln is to keep the laptop operating on the battery till the battery is completely drained of charge. Remove the battery for a couple of hours & after cleaning the battery connection points replace & switch on the AC adapter & check the battery charge without using the laptop to see if the charge has gone up or not, else the battery could be a fake( or Chinese) ...........sodeep

SOURCE: HP Compaq laptop won't charge/power from AC due to blown fuse

Hi there,

There's plenty of causes why your laptop would not power up from the AC adapter and won't charge the battery. Here are some possible causes and solutions to this problem:

Number one, if it's on battery power, the battery is dead or the battery is bad and number two the AC adapter could be bad. Let's roll out number one.

1. Take out the battery, remove main supply, hold power button down for 30 seconds. This will drain the charges in your

battery. Put only power supply in, do not put battery in, turn laptop on, put the battery in.

2. If the solution in no.1 doesn't solve the problem, pull the battery out, keep the battery out of the laptop for this test.

Take your AC adapter and check the voltage with a voltmeter. What you want to test for is voltage. Put the meter at 20

volts DC and take the tip, the power jack tip of your AC power adapter. You hold the black, (the negative part) of your

voltmeter on the outside of the power jack tip of your AC adapter and you put the red (the positive part) of your voltmeter

in the hole in the inside of the power jack tip of your AC adapter. Be very careful not to touch the red and the black part of

your multimeter and the power jack tips of your AC adapter together, otherwise it will create a short circuit.

After doing these procedures, if your AC adapter is good it will output a voltage which ranges from 18 to 19V DC on your

voltmeter, depending on the voltage that puts out on your AC power adapter. If your voltmeter doesn't show any voltage,

probably your AC power adapter is bad or damaged. But if your voltmeter shows up voltage, then we have to go to the

next possible cause why your laptop won't power on.

3. The dc jack on your laptop might be bad, if the dc jack on your laptop is bad or not making a connection to the

motherboard then it look the battery is bad as well, because the battery is now not holding a charge or even taking a

charge. Also, even if your AC power adapter is good and when you insert it to the dc jack in your laptop it could not power

up the laptop because the dc jack is not making a connection to your laptop motherboard in other words the dc jack might

got loose, that's why it's not making any connection to the motherboard. The only way to solve this is that you have to

disassemble your laptop, and take the laptop motherboard out and look where the dc jack is connected. After you found it,
take a file tool and file off a spot on the motherboard where you can reattach the power jack and use a wire to reattach

the power jack to the motherboard.

Hope you find this answer helpful. God bless.

I have a LG LRE30453SW Electric Range and the relay pcb keeps going bad. I get an F7 error when starting the oven. The first time I noticed the black line in, from the power terminal, to the relay pcb was...

First, check the 220v line and breakers are properly grounded and that you are getting a constant 220v at the plug. Then you will need to check the transformer on the unit.To test a transformer you need to know what type of transformer it is first. There is a step up transformer which steps the voltage up and a step down transformer which steps the voltage down.
You will still test the transformers the same way for step up and step down transformers. If it is a step up transformer apply the incoming power to the transformer or plug it up. Now take your multimeter and place it on the AC volt scale and test the voltage if the voltage on the data plate says the transformer should step up to 220 volts and it doesn't then your transformer is bad.
Now repeat the same steps for a step down transformer. Plug up the incoming or primary power and test voltage on the outcoming or secondary side the voltage should step down to the proper value. If you don't read any voltage on the secondary or outgoing side then the transformer is bad.
To read the voltage place the two meter leads on the secondary side, or the side you will plug your equipment into. If the secondary side is an outlet then place the two meter leads into the top two slots in the plug and read voltage. You also want to make sure the incoming power is working as well. Otherwise you will be reading a bad reading every time.
If all that looks good, then you will need to replace the control board. Here is a link to the parts for your range.

I bought a machine from the US last week with 110V specifications and used a step down converter for use in Pakistan which has 220V specifications. When plugged in and turned on, there was a pop sound...

It sounds like something blew in a big way. Likely to be the main power supply board. The step down transformer should have reduced it to the 110 volts you require. Check the transformer to make sure it does actually reduce from 220 to 110 vac. Also check the hertz , (hz) ( cycles) Australia uses 50 hz at 240 volts ac. im unsure what hz USA or Pakistan is. Confirm your transformer output meets the electrical specification of the coffee machine. There may be a local Nespresso machine repairer who will convert yoru USA spec machine to Pakistan voltage thus negating the need for a transformer. It may be a bit expensive replacing all the electrical comonents though, it may still be worthwhile.

Compaq Evo doesnt turn on.

When you plug the laptop to the power adapter, you should see the indicator led lit up telling that it has good connection to the ac adaptor. It wont turn on because either there is a loose connection to the power adaptor and hasn't been charging the battery, or the power adaptor itself is bad. Check the power plug with a miltimeter, it should be around 19 Volts.

Fuse in laptop

Normally the fuse rating is stamped on the end caps of the fuse. It would be rated in amps. Just get one that has the same rating and length.
The fuse will be held in place by spring clips that clip on the end caps of the fuse. Look for these clips, they will fit nearly onto the metal caps of the fuse.

Lap top not turning on

Try removing the battery, waiting 30 seconds, then plugging it back in. Plug in power cord and try to turn it on.

Powered off.

Any beeps when you turn it on? unplug everything and then plug it back in. Make sure the monitor connections are good and that you have it turned on. Again make sure it's turned on. Sometimes it's the simple stuff. Was the monitor working well before it failed? Do you have a video card?
Remove the battery, AC, count to ten and try one last time?
