Toshiba 52hm94 - Bulb replaced/no picture - How to test ballast?

How can I check to see if the ballast is bad?

My 52HM94 seems to be going through bulbs much too quickly.

The rated life for the bulb is 2000 hours.

I operate the unit according to the user manual.

The current is not cut off when I turn the unit off (the on-off indicator blinks for a few minutes after turning the unit off)

I have had the unit 4 years and I have just installed the 5th bulb. On average, I would say that we use the unit less than 15 hours per week (780 hours per year).

I have been told that the ballast may need replacing... Another $250 service call... Is this going to fix the problem?

SOURCE: New bulb/TV still shuts down

Its far more likely the result of the power pwb capacitors that have failed. As the 34 code will appear if the capacitors fail on the Power PWB. You can get the V26 DLP Power repair kit at the following link.with free instructions

The Ballast voltage should 300 volts. You may have a problem on the power board. Possibly some bad capacitors. Look for the tops of the capacitors to be domed instead of flat.

Red power light flashed 5 times

There is no color wheel. This is an SXRD TV. If you have 389 at the ballast, then your ballast is bad. 5 flashes is a bad lamp driver. No TTL signal return to the mainboard. Put a new ballast in. Do not try and measure ballast output without good high voltage gear. The startup pulse is close to 20,000 volts.

How to tell if ballast is bad on samsung dlp tv

It is a common practice that the ballast to repalce along with new bulb. There is no way to check the internal winding short of ballast. Repalce both at the same time. If ballast has any damage, it will surely ruin the bulb too.

KF42WE610 bad lamp... and ballast?

DLP Lamp has electrodes inside and ballast generates high voltage that makes spark on these electrodes thus got high bright light. New lamp wont die due to bad ballast so replace lamp and see tv works or not.
This tv has self diagnostic feature, turn On tv and let it shut down, now check standby light that would be blinking in specific order, for example 3 or 4 times blink then pause for 3 seconds and again blinks.
Let me know how many times standby light blinking in this tv to help you with more info.

Perhaps....If the lamp still will not fire, most likely is a bad ballast. If you are electronically inclined,. first make sure the thermal cutoff on the lamphouse has not opened first and then check to make sure the 300 volt supply to the ballast is ok. If the fans are not running, and this is a combined ballast/power supply, most likely it is bad.

I have a Sony blink red 5 times and video or audio. It happen all of a sudden...what could be the problem?

5 is a bad lamp ballast . but you should check the lamp first. those tv's don't always detect ballast trying to start the lamp correctly. especially if its even been repaired before . most service poeple dont put the hv detect wire back in the correct place so when the lamp goes bad the tv thinks the ballast is bad. listen for a little short buzz or crackle noise from the back of the tv when you try to turn it on . the buzz noise last about 1 second and should happen about every 30 secoinds 3 times . if you hear it only the lamp is probly bad. or its a bad ballast

Replacing ballast

To confirm if the ballast is bad check the ballast board to see if the spark gap (on the ballast board) lights when you first turn the set on. If it does than the ballast is ok.

Ballast on samsung hlp4663w

The transformer can't damage the new lamp. Faulty transformers normaly take out the driving transistors or the fusible link in the power supply, if these are good then just replace the lamp. Espacially if you know the lamp is bad (test it by swapping with the others if unsure)

The ballast uses open ended high voltage. Both the start current, and the running voltage must be verified.

Normaly the ballast is replaced unless you have the test jigg which is essentialy the specified lamp simulator.

If there is a sensor fault that indicates there may be a potential cooling problem, or an unsafe fault condition (bad socket), or if the lamp is sensed as being defective, the ballast will be shut down.

Samsung LA40R71BD will not turn on stanby button keeps flashing and making a clicking sound.

This could be lamp or ballast. First I would check the lamp. It could be bad (causing the clicking) or it may just need to be reseated with the ballast. If the lamp is not bad make sure it is connected to the ballast and pushed all the way in. If you still hear the clicking (the clicking may be the ballast trying to light the lamp. when turning on your tv, look to see if the ballast is flickering causing the clicking) and your lamp is good and seated correctly, then you ballast is going bad and it needs to be replaced. Last but not least. If that is not the problem then the clicking is a broken color wheel. A broken color wheel will sound like a clicking or a high squeal when going bad.
