Replace the hard drive. It is very difficult to fix the hdd password. You can try to detach the hdd, and leave it for 1 day. Also detach the ac adapter and the main battery. The next day, install hdd and restart the laptop.

Is the error message coming before bios starts to load XP from harddisk, or after?

If it is coming after XP starts then it may be driver issue.

If it is coming before XP, then it may be a question of incorrect bios for the hardware in your laptop.

This is copied directly from the Lenovo website.

Note: Do not forget your hard disk password! Keep it in a safe place. If you forget your hard disk password, there is no way to reset your password or recover data in the hard disk drive. Neither an IBM authorized reseller nor IBM marketing
representative can make the hard disk drive usable.

SOURCE: acer aspire 1690, what is HDD password to start laptop

This password is to protect unauthorized access to data on the hard drive. The password is stores on the firmware chip on the hard drive and there are no backdoor passwords available, and moving the hard drive to another computer will not work either.
Ask the person who set the password, then you will be able to remove it by going into the BIOS setup.
The only other option is to install a new hard drive and reinstall Windows.

SOURCE: Hdd password frozen on ACER laptop CMOS

Hey,

the HDD (HardDrive) password problem is too complex to be solved at home. I suggest taking the computer to a professional together with proof of purchase. I Know acer provides this service also.

Let me know if you need anything else.

Thanks,
Ekse

ID FROZEN ON MY ACER ASPIRE V5-471. I NEVER PUT A HDD PASSWORD IN IT WHEN I BOUGHT THE LAPTOP 4 YEARS AGO.HOW CAN I FIX THAT.

Does it makes any kind of sound when you boot? Is the HDD frozen or is it password protected? If it makes a clicking sound when you boot the computer then the HDD pointer inside the HDD is stuck.
If you can get to the BIOS, you can delete any password from the BIOS. If the HDD does not shows up in the BIOS, then your HDD is probably fry.

Hdd frozen password

if you never put a password on the BIOS then the problem is in the hard disk. Virus infection?
If you know how to run a Live CD with some of the Linux OS e.g Ubuntu, Mint, and the computer works and you see no message then the problem is in the hard disk.
You might need to remove the hard disk to try the live CD.
If you still get the BIOS message and you didn't put a password then you have a corrupted BIOS. You can try to flash the BIOS (risky it might kill the pc) but you might solve the problem.

The HDD password is a BIOS function. A password is set and passed to the HDD. Then the BIOS on power up sends the password to the HDD and unlocks it on each boot. It could be your HDD is dead and so when BIOS sends pwd to HDD there is no response.Try BIOS reset to defaults

if you download the sata drivers from the toshiba website for your specific laptop and then extract them and get nlite ( www.nliteos.com and slipstream the drivers into the xp disc you can then re install xp and it should allow you to boot.

As for the hard drive frozen password that should be in the bios on the hard drive that you set it for so it should remember it

if not you may have to contact toshiba and they should have a back door password that they can produce once you give them the asset tag ( serial number of the laptop ) and once you enter that it should resolve the hard drive frozen issue.

Had a hard drive frozen at a school once and had to call dell ( as it was a dell laptop obviously ) and gave them the serial number and they created a back door password for me - jobs a good one :D

Cant boot

If you are sure no one has tampered with it and entered a HDD password and it is not prompting for a password then it is most likely a HDD failure. It is possible the BIOS will still recognize the HDD. Try disconnecting and reconnecting the HDD if you can access it there should be screws on the bottom marked with a cylinder symbol.
