I don't know how to even begin to download Europe on my TomTom. Is it possible ? Please help. I'm going to France and Spain in a few months. Would like to take my own TomTOm.

Thank you,

Yes you can I have europe and canada on mine.

just plug your tomtom into your computer and start tomtom home

On the computer screen for tomtom select ADD MAPS

Here you can select and buy the maps you need.

Once you have confirmed the purchase you will be given instructions on how to download etc

Some maps may take a little time to install to the tomtom itself.

you should also ensure there is enough space on your tomtom
If not you will have to get an SD memory card.

I use a 4gb one that still has lots of room to spare

Yes you can put maps of Western Europe on your TomTom One Third Edition, but you will have to purchase it from TomTom. Make sure you make a backup of your US and
Canada map before you put the Western Europe map on your TomTom or you will have to purchase another map for US and Canada. Do not use TomTom Home to do this. Make a new folder on your desktop and copy and paste the US and Canada map to the new folder.

SOURCE: tomtom

You would have to seriously abuse your tomtom for the battery to have failed. More likely something else is wrong . Anyway , ere goes : Take 4 screws out of back of tomtom ( these are star screws so you will need a special tool but sometimes an allen key will fit. ) At the top / side of the tomtom where you can see the join of plastic between back and front. Pull apart with your fingers . Its tricky but keep trying and eventually it will come apart a little. From that you can release it from the bottom connectors by pushing the back downwards a little against the base of the front. A little waddle and it will part. The batter is located in the back panel and is held in place with a sticky pad. The battery wires terminate in a small plug connected to the main board. The Battery should be marked " Edinburgh " and should be rated at 3.7 volts 1100mAh. Once again , its very unlikely there is any fault with the battery , more likely to be the charger or charging circuit inside the tomtom.

SOURCE: tomtom xl eurpoe switching off

The switching off problem can be generaly be attributed to 3 causes:

  1. Battery is not being charged enough ( charging via USB from a PC will take days ) your charger could be putting out the correct voltage but not enough current.
  2. The battery is on its way out. TomTom batteries have a set lifetime where they gradualy take less and less charge. if your battery capacity is low then you might just have enough power in it to allow the TomTom to start up but then it shuts down again shortly after. ( You can check this becuase if powering the tomtom via a power supply the tomtom should remain switched on ). If this is the case , then it probably proves the battery is the problem.
  3. Faulty software ( very possible ) . I have found that where certain files are corrupted on the SD card the TomTom will shut down at some point in the loading up cycle. The reasoning being that if the TomTom cannot procede with boot up , it will either hang or shutdown or load up incorrectly.
If you made a backup of your SD card then formatting and reloading the files from your PC might cure the problem.

GOOD LUCK

SOURCE: Loading TomTom one maps for northern France

Hi,
First you need to have the relivent map on your SD card. Typicly this will be the Tomtom Map " Western Europe ". When you purchase maps from TomTom you also get an activation code and instructions telling you how to install the map onto your device and how to authorise it using the code that comes with it.
Before doing anything ... BACK-UP your existing data ( the whole SD card ) onto your computer . This will ensure that if any update is unsuccesful you can at least return things to the way they were before you tried to update.
There are several ways to obtain maps

  • buy a new TOMTOM SD card for your tomtom that containes the required maps. Make sure it comes with the authorisation card.
  • buy a CD from TomTom or a TomTom authorised dealer . This CD will contain the required map so you can download the required map to your own SD card. Make sure it comes with the authorisation code AND instructions.
  • buy the required map from TomTom online . You can download it to your PC , then copy it onto your SD card later. It will come with some instructions and authorisation code ...... You can also use "TomTom Home" software and this does most of the job of downloading maps ( that you buy from tomtom ) and puts them onto your sd card for you in a semi-automatic way . If you go down this route then its best to be sure you have the latest version of TomTom home software by going to the TomTom website first.
With ANY of the above methods------- BACK UP your existing SD card first . In fact ... make a BACK UP NOW , then if anything goes wrong at any time , you can at least revert back to your backup.

Good Luck

Hi I have a to tom go 500. The voices worked fine when I tested it in New Zealand. I then downloaded the Europe map, assumed all was well but on arriving in Europe I find that I cannot get the voice...

It may be possible that the (Europe) map version that you have doesn't have voice instructions (data) that is compatible with the navigation software (that you have on the TomTom GO 500). If you can indicate the navigation software version and the Europe map version, that possibility can be checked further.

Tom tom 710

I am STILL trying to download the latest Wester Europe Maps to my Go 700. But I have found this answer to your question. Any tips on how I down load the v7.20 to my TomTom? good luck.

When navigating to a location in the UK or The Netherlands you should be able to enter full digit postcodes.
If you are only able to enter 4 digits, follow the instructions below.

  1. Download the file below and save it to your computer.

    downloadbutton.gif wezipcodes715.zip (10.5 MB)

  2. Extract the contents of the downloaded file to your desktop (on PC right-click the downloaded file and select Extract to).

You will now have a folder called 'zip' on your desktop.

  3. Connect your TomTom device to your computer.

  4. If you are using a PC click Start > My Computer and double-click the icon for your TomTom device.

If you are using a Mac click the icon for your TomTom device on your desktop.

  5. Copy the complete 'zip' folder to your TomTom device.

Note: The 'zip' folder should be copied to the 'root' of your TomTom device. This means not inside one of the folders.

Tom tom one xl wont accept SD card with map on

If you have TomTom that have the slot for SD card, then it should accepted the SD card. The instruction for how to use the SD card is simple, but it is hidden in the TomTom Home, that's why it's difficult to find it. Below are the instruction how to use the SD card.

1. Format the SD card (FAT32) and do not stick the SD in the slot yet
2. Run Backup (connect TomTom device to computer)
3. Disconnect TomTom from computer and turn off
4. Slide the SD into the slot and connect TomTom back to computer (choose "yes")
5. In the TomTom Home menu, Choosen Backup & Restore >>> and choosen Restore

TomTom Home will add all applications to the SD card. So the internal memory still have the applications and the SD card also had the same applications. Everytime you slide the card in, TomTom will automatic detect and use it as its primary storage, if it not detect, you can go to the device menu and pick the device to connect to.
Whenver you take the SD card out, then TomTom will use its internal memory.

Hope this helpful

Broken Usb!! Please Help!!

If its a tomtom one V2 then the only way to charge is via USB . Looks like you need a repair. There are many places to get it repaired other than TomTom but we need to know where in the WORLD you are ? Theres no point in telling you theres a repair shop in Downtown Sidney if you actually live in France .

Tomtom 1 (new edition) map of europe

I think you'll find that you can download it from tomtom home, with full technical help online & on the phone.

I dont advise COPYING it from a friend as you will get a symbol appear on the screen with a tomtom SD card with a large red cross through it, indicating that the tomtom knows its not a genuine copy.
