The thermostat wire is shorted. Somewhere between the thermostat and furnace. Replace the wire and make sure its connected correctly. This is an older furnace. Not sure what the thermostat wire connections to the furnace look like. Sometimes if one of the wires touches a ground this could happen. So, start by completely replacing the thermostat wiring.
That sounds normal. When the bonnet reaches a preset temperature the burner turns off then when it cools down a bit the burner turns back on. Clean filters etc will help to keep the burner on longer in a cycle.

At tstat press options. Press installer setup. Yes, you are qualified. System settings, non heat pump. Gas/ oil heat. Save changes. That should do it with no wiring changes.
