My Frigidaire Microwave caught on fire

I was microwaving a yam and set the Baked Potatoe setting. Luckily it made a noise because I was not watching it. I came in to find the entire inside of microwave totally on fire. Very scarey. I was so relieved to be able to get it out and not have suffered worse damage to my house.

The owner's manual warns of the dangers of overcooking potatoes and similar foods and not to ever leave the oven unattended while it's running.

If for some reason you don't have your owner's manual, you can download Frigidaire owner's manuals and installation instructions here.

Are you looking for help to get your microwave working again?

Chances are it's just an opened flame sensor (cavity thermostat / thermal cutout / T.C.O.). Its job is to cut power if there's a fire.

You can find helpful exploded view diagrams and order parts by entering your full model number from the tag on the oven here.

Accessing some components for testing and possible replacement (like the oven cavity thermostat) will require you to remove the oven from the wall.

If so, the installation instructions are very handy, and it's best to have two people since the microwave can be heavy and awkward.

We're happy to help you with free advice and we'd appreciate your thoughtful rating of our answer.

SET TIMER FOR 20 MINUTES FOR BAKED POTATOE.. CAME BACK AND FOUND POTATOES CHARCOALED. SMOKE AND SINGED INSIDE. MICROWAVE WILL NOT COME ON. CHECKED CIRCUIT BREAKER. POWER TO UNIT.

That was a very long duration to have set for potatoes. It would have made the magnetron burnt by exeeding the limit and findinf there was no conductive medium by moisture , it has ended up burning the magnetron.
First of all clean up the inside and clean up the point of the magnetron beam. Now confirm on the inside to be totally dry.
Disconnect power and check inside for break of fuse to the magnetron. If the microwave does not heat on testing with a cup of water , then it is possible that the magnetron is cooked.
Confirm the cost for the unit to decide on replacement.
Hope this helps.

Yam caught fire in microwave

If you have given the microwave enough time to cool off and it still does not work then I would suggest that you would need a new one, as the circuit board may be fried that connects the control panel.

Fire and Smoke

While this is true of all microwave ovens, owner's manuals tell you to never leave the oven unattended while it's cooking. The manual also mentions low-moisture foods (potatoes specifically, and popcorn is another) as combustables which can catch fire. See attahced screenshots.
