You are the only person to flag this issue. Contact ElnaPress directly. Is is new to you? My thought is that there is some type of button or trigger on the handle to release it, so it stays locked up until you are ready to press.
Not an answer, but a note to say this same thing has just happened with mine in Sydney. Its only three months old. I have contacted Deals Direct, and they don't have any repair options. They won't replace it becuase they model they have in stock is a newer one to the one I have, so a return seems to be the only option. Pity, because I loved this thing. It really made ironing easier.
If it were left on its possible that the element that heats the water has burned out think blown light bulb have your Mr Test it with a ohm meter to see if the circuit is open
