I have had this problem "Hardware Error 0502" which kept getting worse until I could not print any more. So I open the cartridge cover & removed both good cartridges, pushed the cartridge carrier fully to the right hand side & with one slightly damp cloth, a dry cloth & a pair of latex gloves (as the ink stains your skin) I first carfully cleaned the guey head like things on the bottom inside the printer on the left hand side. I removed a load of hard & soft gue with the damp cloth then finished with the dry cloth. Next I cleaned the bottom track aswell, moved the cartriage carrier fully to the left hand side to clean the rest of the bottom track. I then re-installed both cartriages & the printer is now perfect again!
You have to use oil (olive oil) or petroleum jelly and wipe, using a paper towel, the horizontal silver bar that the cartridge carriage rides across. The ink builds up on this, making it difficult for the carriage to slide across. This works for me every time, and you'll notice a lot of ink on your paper towel!

If the printer is still under warranty, it is best to replace it, as error 502 is usually recurrent. Otherwise, please follow the link below to the Lexmark website for a detailed troubleshooting guide for error 502:
Unfortunately this appears to be a hardware failure and the printer is out of warranty. It is likely that the parts, repair and replacement fees would be more expensive than the actual cost of a new printer at this point.
The encoder strip may have gone out of range of the sensor, or it might be dirty. Resolution
You need to check the encoder strip on the printer. This is a clear
strip running the length of the printer, above or behind the cartridge
carrier. Check the encoder strip
Switch off the printer using the power button.
Disconnect the power cable from the back of the printer.
Leave the power cable disconnected for 30 seconds.
Slide the cartridge carrier to the middle of the printer by taking the top part of the belt and moving it gently to the right.
Take out both cartridges.
Place an index finger on the encoder strip on either side of the cartridge carrier.
On the back of the cartridge carrier, there
is a small slot that the encoder strip fits into. Slightly push the
encoder strip down and then back up to get it into the slot.
Lightly press the strip first to the rear and then forward, if necessary.
Clean the encoder strip with a dry tissue. Also clean the contacts of the printer.
Click here for an enlarged view. The contacts on the back of the cartridge carrier are the ones you need to clean. IMPORTANT: Use a dry tissue.
Reconnect the power cable and switch the printer on again.
Perform the hardware test, first without the cartridges and then
with both cartridges. Click on the applicable article link below.
1. On your PC, go to Start, Programs (Windows XP: All Programs), Lexmark series. 2. Select the Solution Center. 3. When the Solution Center appears, click on the Maintenance button. 4. Select the option to Install a new print cartridge. The carrier should slide over at this point and allow you to insert and/or remove cartridges. 5. Make sure the correct cartridges are installed inside the printer first, then inform the software which cartridges have been installed. Note: This applies also to installation of a single cartridge. 6. Print the Print Alignment page to ensure the print quality is satisfactory. 7. Close the Solution Center.
