Resetting: http://news.teamxbox.com/xbox/11131/Xbox-360-Cache-Clear-Code-Revealed/
You should be able to open the cd tray and then unplug the system so it stays open. Grab a flashlight and you can see the laser lens. You may need something longer than a Q-tip but should be cotton at least. Be very carfull not to push or try to move the lens.

Sounds like main system control memory IC is faulty. Anyway, do a reset to this set and check. It it too do not help, replace the memory IC
To make it a hard reset, just unplug the TV from AC mains wall socket, and re-plug it back after 15 minutes or so. This procedure will make it a hard reset. If you want to make it a system reset [Factory Reset]; you have to enter its service mode option, and select the factory reset option. If you wish to get some details; check the site linked here. Pull up older posts. Surf the site with patience. http://electronicshelponline.blogspot.com/
Service mode entry, adjust and exit procedure to many popular brand TVs are given. Never forget to exit the service mode, after all adjustments have been done.

Have hatachi tv 2 years old and can install all channels and all ok but then suddenly can loose sound and screen says *not in service* so I have to retune and install channels again but it keeps doing...

Main system control memory IC fault. This is a very small IC; have 8 solder terminals, and can be located very near to the main system control-chroma IC. Check and replace it. Be sure to replace it with the same number printed on it; in all respect. Otherwise, it won't go. http://electronicshelponline.blogspot.com/ Before replacing it, try a reset to this set, and then check.
There are two methods to reset TVs. The first is simple to do; a Hard Reset. The other is somewhat skilled; is a Factory Reset (System Reset). To make it a hard reset, just unplug the TV from AC mains wall socket, and re-plug it back after 15 minutes or so. If you do this by overnight is better. This procedure will make it a hard reset. If you want to make it a system reset [Factory Reset]; you have to enter its service mode option, and select the factory reset option. If you wish to get some details; check the site linked here.

How do you reset the family password on the xbox 360

1. On the 360 dashboard, scroll over to the "System" tab.
2. On the System tab, click "Console Settings".
3. Scroll down in console settings and click "System Info".
4. When the system info box comes up type in this sequence:
LT RT X Y LB RB Y "Left Stick in" (press it in) Y Y
A box should come up and say, "Would you like to reset the console to the factory defaults?"
Click Reset and you're done!

If this doesn't work, and that's highly unlikely, call Microsoft at 1-800-4MY-XBOX (U.S.). Provide them with your registration info and they will tell you how to reset the console. If you would like to keep your game memory take out your hard drive and follow directions above. Hope this helps.

My nephew's original xbox will not turn on it just flashes green and orange around the power button

If your system has had an internal system error (three lights) and is now having issues recognizing controllers, remotes, and/or personal music player's, the only currently know solution is to rerun initial setup.

Rerun initial setup
Before trying this, it's highly recommend that you remove all hard drive and memory cards. Once you've removed all hard drives and memory cards, navigate to the systems tab in the main menu and select the "Initial Setup" option. Once you select the option, it will ask you if want to run the initial setup that occurred when you first started your console. Say yes and it will do its thing. When it asks for a memory card/hard drive, just decline and it should be done. You should see the default dashboard screen as confirmation that it did, in fact, rerun initial setup.

Resetting to factory defaults / resetting parental locks (unconfirmed)
This was posted on the xbox-scene forums and might work only with older versions of Xbox 360 dashboard.

Press the following key combination

  • Left Trigger, Right Trigger, X, Y, Left Bumper, Right Bumper, Up, Left Bumper, Left Bumper, X

This should give you a dialogue asking whether or not you want to reset your system to factory default settings.

Reset Xbox 360 video settings
While the Xbox 360 is starting up, hold Y and Right trigger. This will cause the system to reboot and reset the video settings.

Play dvds on my xbox it says that my memory card is not in

Hmm that is odd but make sure the hard drive is firmly in its spot otherwise the console might keep doing that to ya. and it says memory unit it might be referring to the the memory units in front of the 360 so make sure you don't have anything in those slots that might be loose.

Xbox 360 wont play the games but will play cds and dvds !!!!

Mocrosoft only entended the warranty on the "ring of death" issue which was hardware related to overheating.  They did not extend the warranty to any other issues.  DVD/CD emulators and the games emulators are handled by different software.
You can try a factory reset of the console...

If none of this works contact Microsoft and see if the console is still under warranty.  If not they will repair it for usually 99.00
