I have a 12 year old Whirlpool top loading washing machine. The center piece (agitator?) will not move when I try to spin it when it is filling with water. It will also not agitate once the machine is filled. Any ideas of the problem and if I need to call a pro or get a new machine?
Hi everyone - I ended up calling a repairman. It was small part that needed to be replaced. It cost me $65 for the visit, $20 for labor and $20 for parts. The repairman told me it would probably be good for another 5 years.

You have bad agitator dogs . Easily replaceable and inexpensive . Remove the center bolt holding the agitator on and seperate the 2 agitator pieces . You will see 4 teardrop looking pieces ( dogs ) . Replace and your done .
When you put the motor in did you replace the coupler between the motor and transmission? When fixing the agitator you need to get the agitator repair kit, It has seals, dogs, thrust plate, cam bearing and seals. The upper agitator is supposed to move only in one direction to get the clothes to move down towards the agitator. Do not overload machine. I have one of these and after 12 years I finally had to install this upper repair kit because the upper agitator quit moving. You may have an agitate cam that is going bad inside the transmission
Your agitator dogs must be replaced.
With a flat blade screwdriver pry off the top cover on the agitator.
Remove the 7/16 bolt inside.
Pull up on the agitator and remove it.
Purchase the agitator dog kit from the appliance parts store.About $10.00.
NO,your transmission is probably ok!! Inside your top end of agitator are these 4 plastic parts called "dogs" they need to be replaced. To be 100% sure ,do this first,Fill upthe machine on small load and while its washing look to see if the bottom end of agitator is moving back and forth ,if it is replace the dogs.In some machines you have to change the upper part of agitator. If the agitator is not turning at the bottom than, remove the top of agitator cover so you can get a extended half inch socket in to it and pull the agitator up and check the transmission splines. If they are smooth and cannot grab the agitator than your trans, is bad.
