This should fix the drum light being on that 1720

Turn off the power using the switch on the back of the printer. Open the front door of the printer. Hold Continue button down, power on the printer, and continue to holding Continue down until the LEDs begin to flash. When the LEDs start to flash, release Continue button. The LEDs will continue flashing until only Error LED will be lit. Close the front door. Continue, Ready/Data, Toner Low and Load Paper LEDs should be lit. Wait till the printer completes the POST process. POST is complete when fan noise and rollers stops. After POST wait for 5 seconds Press Cancel button 4 times slowly until the Toner Low LED is lit. SOURCE: Paper jammed (Dell lase Printer 1720dn

Open the back cover and look for paper wrapped around a roller back there. That is the most common cause of the issues with this machine. The other thing you can try is to push down on the little flaps where the paper comes out of the printer. These get stuck and need cleaning/replacement all the time in the later life of these models (1720's).

Printer i making a weird clicking sound. It won't print. It has error light On. Status: load tray 1 / Plain letter Toner level is 80%

check if there is a paper at tray 1. if so, may be the printer is unable to pick up paper due pick-up roller problem. try to remove the tray and look in the middle, there should be a rubber like roller. if its too glossy it cant pick the paper.

I'm having problems with my 1720 Dell printer...the load paper light comes on after one page printing out however I can occassional get it to print if I cancel the job and put paper in the manual feeder...

it sounds like your driver is set to print to the manual feeder OR set to a different paper size (like legal) Check your driver settings under printers in the control panel. (it'll be along the lines of "paper type" or "tray settings" under printing prefrences. Just as a heads up, it could also be the software causing the issue. MS word tends to hijack settings and create problems as well.

Load Paper light

You need to clean the feed roller, if you take out the paper tray and tip the printer on it's back you can see the roller and clean with just a damp cloth and try printing again...

I need to print 5X8 index cards on my Dell 1720dn. No matter how I load the cards, it says I'm out of paper

Are you using the manual feed slot in front of the printer and setting the paper size properly in your software? 3x5 is supported by Dell so this should work.

Dell 1720dn laser printer

If the paper intake rollers are slick and grab paper on an angle, the feed causes the paper to move off center. Rubbing the rollers with a cloth and rubbing alcohol will clean them. Slightly rubbing the entire roller with a fine abrasive material can help with the paper path issue.
