Reading usb

If you are inserting the USB into a PC and it does not automatically recognize it go to "My Computer" then look for it there under "Devices with removable storage"
Click on the device and that should allow you to access you have on that USB.
If you are installing hardware with a USB connection, then you may have to go to the "Control Panel" then look for "Hardware and Sound" then "Devices and Printers" and then you can either install the device or the printer from there if you have the software for it.

Failure to recognize CD ROM or USB ports

  1. Run Registry Editor (regedit).
  2. Navigate to the following registry key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\UsbStor
  3. In the right pane, double click on the Start value name.
  4. Change the value data to 4 to disable the removable USB mass storage device drive access
  5. 5.
  6. To revert and re-enable the drive access for removable USB mass storage device driver, change back the value data for Start to its original default of 3.
The change will take effect immediately to block any USB mass storage device such as USB flash drive, USB key and portable harddisk from been used in the system, while still allowing hardware components to work properly via USB connection. The hack works in most Windows operating system such as Windows Vista, XP, Windows Server 2008, 2003 and 2000.
For user who dare not to modify the registry manually, simply download the following registration entries file to enable or disable the USB drive. Extract the downloaded content in .ZIP format, and then double click on the .REG file to open and apply or merge the registry values to system.

How can i get an olympus w 20 driver under windows 7?

You shouldn't need a driver for windows 7, once you plug in the device it your computer should recognize it as a USB Mass Storage device just like it would with a USB flash drive which can be accessed by going to my My Computer then double clicking the icon for the USB Mass Storage Device. You can also download the user manual for this product from this page http://www.olympus.co.jp/en/support/imsg/vtrek/download/manual/.

My maxtor is not recognized any longer on my laptop..i have owned it for 5 years and have not had this problem before..i checked device manager and it appears to be "functioning properly" but i...

> functioning properly

Means only that the plug-and-play hardware has been recognized, and that the correct device-drivers have been loaded. It says _nothing_ about the physical condition of the Maxtor.

An external storage-device has four major components:

* the USB cable

* the power-adapter

* the disk-drive inside the enclosure

* the USB-to-disk-drive adapter inside the enclosure.

One of these components has failed.

Try a different USB cable.

Try connecting to a different USB port on your computer.

Try connecting to a USB port on a different computer.

Take a "multi-meter" and measure both the voltage and amperage output from the AC adapter, and compare with the specifications on the label on the adapter.

Open the enclosure, and remove the disk-drive, and then connect it as a "slave" disk-drive in a desktop computer, to see if it works at all.

Purchase a new, compatible, disk-drive, and install it in the enclosure, to "revive" your external storage device.

Get the part-number and serial-number from the label on your disk-drive, and access the manufacturer's web-site, and use "check warranty status", to see if they will replace the device, at minimal cost to you.

There exist commercial "data recovery" services that can try to repair your device, just long-enough to rescue and copy your files. For example, see: https://services.seagate.com/index.aspx?lng=en-US for a "no data - no charge" guarantee.

I am trying to trasfer a large amount of files from my macbook to a dell laptop. The mac will recognize the drive and i am able to backup and save files onto it, however when i plug the drive into the...

The problem most likely is the Dell does not recognize the MAC file format (HPFS), but the MAC will recognize the PC's FAT 32 file system.
First format the USB mass storage device using the Dell, format this device in FAT 32 not in NTFS because the MAC can read and write/copy PC format files but the Dell/PC cannot read MAC format files.
Then Safely remove this device, connect it to the MAC and copy the files onto this drive. When you connect this device to the Dell, you will be able to see the files.
Have fun.

Hello

A few questions that may confirm problem.
Does your computer seem to know that something is plugged in?
Or does it say that it does not recognize the device?

Software for the western digital elite hdd when using vista 64bit

What kind of software are you looking for? This should be automatically recognized by Vista as an external storage device. If it is not recognized and you cannot see/use the device; you need a driver to allow vista to talk with your USB device. Are you looking for backup software? Please clarify.
