1. Unplug the unit
2. Turn the unit upside down and listen for the beeds to move along the static wires from top to bottom. Turn it upside down again and again until you feel the static wires are cleaned of grime.
3. Plug it in again and see if the hissing is gone.

Unplug the unit. Take out the grid. Then turn the unit upside down and listen for the beads to move from one end of the static wire to the end. Do this several times to remove the grime off the wires. Then, check the grid and make sure all the dirt is off the plates. Dry and then insert back into the unit and turn it on. It should only hiss about 20 to 30 seconds while removing the static electricity. This has always worked for me so I hope it works for you.

Makes a hissing sound after I clean it

It may be a little late that I am answering your conundrum, but once you clean it, put the unit back together, tip it upside down until you hear a "click" and then turn it on. No hissing :)

I have a GP silent air purifier and I just ordered new bulbs for it. They still do not light up when I turn it on. Is the machine defective?

sharper image has been sued big time for this product and has had to file bankrupcy because of it

SHARPER IMAGE GP S1871

The bad news is Sharper Image recalled the units. They got into a legal squabble over the product with Consumer Reports on the unit based on an article they ran. Sharper Image couldn't prove how the unit worked so they lost the suit and had to pay all the legal bills forcing the company into bankruptcy.

I have a sharper image Ionic Breeze GP still under warranty. One of the blue lights on the Germicidal lamp is out and needs to be replaced. Where can I purchase this part, now that Sharper Image is no...

If the warranty you are counting on is a Sharper Image Warranty I need to advise you that it was voided in the buyout on 30 May, 2008 when everything at Sharper Image was liquidated by Hilco Consumer Capital, Gordon Brothers, and Bluestar Alliance. If however it was a warranty company outside of Sharper Image you need to contact them.

You can purchase a bulb for the GP on ebay for under $11, which is really a good price considering what you would have paid from Sharper Image. Installation is easy, you just pull up on the tab on the bottom of the filter and pull up. When you are looking at the bulb, turn it 1/4 turn, (2 clicks) and pull it out. That is all there is to it. I got the prong on the plug a bit wet. i dried it off and waited, but when i did plug it into the outlet, it made a short hiss and now it doesn't seem to work at all. I'm referring to my ionic breeze

you will probably need to replace the plug you can buy them at almost any hardware store or radio shack
